There's no shortage of great clubs in London. The first modern venue dedicated to all things dance was Webster Hall in 1886, but the city has seen many different types of nightlife evolve over the years. From The Four Aces Club, a 60s Dalston venue that was one of the first to play black music in Britain, to Charing Cross’ Heaven, which took over a former roller disco in 1979 and aspired to be the world’s most famous gay club, the clubbing scene here is historic and continues to show no signs of slowing down.

Find recommendations book your tickets or tables on DesignMyNight. Our top picks will take you on a tour of the cream of the late-night crop; from basement joints and dive bars with the best DJs to industrial warehouses nodding to elements of 80s rave culture. There's even a range of music genres (like RnB clubs, classic cheese, house and more), prices (including some rare free-entry nightclubs), and locations.

If there's one place you can find your clubbing nirvana, it's London

2. Fabric

  • Best for: big nights out, globally renowned DJs, late-night dancing, big club energy
  • Entry: typically £13 - £26, depending on the event and ticket type
  • Why we recommend: Fabric is nothing if not iconic, having served the clubbing scene since 1999. It's globally renowned, and for good reason; equipped with some of the best sound systems available and a vibration-sensitive "Bodysonic" dancefloor so you can really feel the music, the industrial, underground-style club showcases the very best DJs and artists across its three distinct floors

Renowned as one of the top clubs in London, Fabric is the place to go for late-night partying. Not only is it a hub for electronic music, but it's also a record label and online shop. Founded in 1999 by Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie, it has three separate rooms with independent sound systems, with Room One featuring 400 bass transducers emitting frequencies to create an immersive dancing experience.

It hosts an eclectic lineup of events throughout the week, spanning the likes of house, techno and disco, with nights typically starting at 11pm from Friday to Sunday. Expect collaborations with Boiler Room, Waterworks afterparties and more.

12. HERE At Outernet

  • Best for: music enthusiasts, birthdays, group nights out, big-name DJs

HERE At Outernet can be found right next to Tottenham Court Road, existing as one of London's most technologically advanced event spaces, with jaw-dropping design and 360-degree screens.

Playing host to a wide range of nights from electronic symphonies to throw-back club nights, this electric nightclub is one of Central's finest.

17. The Piano Works Farringdon

2-4-1 Cocktails

  • Location: Farringdon and West End
  • Music genre: their nightly live bands take requests - so anything you want
  • Best for: birthdays, group nights out, live music, late-night dancing
  • Entry: free before 9pm; typically £10 - £15 afterwards
  • Why we recommend: what makes The Piano Works special is their nightly live bands that act as your human jukebox, playing your requests throughout the evening. When here for a mate's birthday, I absolutely loved the interactive element where you can soundtrack your own evening, meaning singalongs (or screamalongs, in our case) are inevitable

The Piano Works is a solid choice when it comes to partying, offering a fun atmosphere and in-house musicians who provide the tunes all night long. Better yet, you can request whichever songs you wish to bop to from their human jukebox.

This lively location is found inside a listed Victorian building in Farringdon as well as in the heart of the West End, open 'til 2am on Fridays and Saturdays whipping up an unbeatable list of cocktails to choose from as well - think zombies, pornstar martinis and Red Bull-based Watermelon Ginbulls.

25. The Arts Theatre Club

  • Location: 50 Frith Street, Soho, W1D 4SQ
  • Music genre: 80s, 90s, disco, jazz, swing, soul and funk
  • Best for: unique nights out, late-night dancing, retro vibes
  • Entry: typically from £10; free with £100 annual membership (includes up to 4 guests per visit)
  • Why we recommend: feel like you've stepped back in time at The Arts Theatre Club, one of Soho's best hidden gems. Though a private members club, its club nights are open to the public, where you can dance the night away to retro hits and disco while drinking cocktail teapots

Situated in the heart of Soho, The Arts Theatre Club is a cracking place for your night-out antics. Open until 3am almost every day, the great London club boasts Prohibition vibes with dimly lit candles and a vintage piano doubling as a DJ booth.

It's housed in what was once the playground of notorious London gangsters the Krays and is steeped in history. This sophisticated destination is open to everyone, but if you want to feel a little bit special, then the annual £100 membership fee is well worth it for the exclusive perks provided to you and your guests.

26. Freedom

  • Location: 66 Wardour Street, Soho, W1F 0TA
  • Music genre: disco, pop, house, dance
  • Best for: LGBTQ+ friendly, quirky clubbing, late-night dancing, birthdays
  • Entry: free most nights
  • Why we recommend: echoing the inclusive, lively vibe of Soho, Freedom brings the party atmosphere with live DJs until 3am throughout the week - so whether you're here on a Friday or a Monday, you're promised a wild night out on the tiles

Located on Wardour Street, Freedom is a fantastic late-night club and gay bar to check out. Boasting plush seating, two dance poles and raucous DJs, the haunt also has a downstairs that frequently hosts cabaret and drag shows.

And when you're thirsty, you can tip back a cocktail or two from the beautiful drinking den upstairs - we recommend the lemon and butterscotch-flavoured Joan Crawford, or the Marlon Brando for something a little spicy.

32. Heaven

  • Location: 9 The Arches, Embankment, WC2 6NG
  • Music genre: pop, dance anthems, throwback hits, live performances
  • Best for: queer-friendly, big blowouts, birthdays, stag and hens, cheesy
  • Entry: free before 10pm with wristband or guestlist; typically £3 - £10 thereafter, depending on the event
  • Why we recommend: Heaven is an iconic LGBTQ+ venue and epic superclub in the centre of London, featuring multiple dancefloors (each with its own vibe and music style). You'll also find DJs bringing the house down at their G-A-Y Saturdays club nights and mid-week parties, with music from the likes of Charli XCX, Beyonce and Lady Gaga

When you think of the best gay bars and clubs in London, Heaven always springs to mind. This huge venue has a capacity for almost 2000 people, maintaining its reputation of inclusivity and cracking nights out over the years.

It's been around for over 40 of them; set up by Jeremy Norman, it took over a former roller disco and transformed the space into a party den for the disco-hungry gays of the city and, as a result, has had a major influence on the development of the LGBTQIA+ scene in London. You can find this super club under Charing Cross station, with regular queer icon-themed parties, drag shows and live performances. Even better? You can keep the good vibes going until 5am most days.
