Trafalgar Square sits at the centre of one of London's best eating neighbourhoods, within a short walk you'll find everything from buzzy Japanese restaurants and modern British dining to pre-theatre menus, casual Italian and some of the city's most iconic spots. We've been covering London restaurants for over 13 years, and this is our edit of the best restaurants near Trafalgar Square right now.

Leicester Square Kitchen

3 Plates Pre-Theatre Dinner Menu - £30 and 3 other offers

Just a five-minute walk from Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square Kitchen brings contemporary Mexican and Peruvian small plates to the heart of the West End. Housed within the Radisson Blu Edwardian, expect paprika-dusted calamari, chargrilled cabbage steak with jalapeño truffle butter and grilled wagyu and chorizo chilli cheese sliders, all designed for sharing. There's a pre-theatre set menu from £23 for two plates, making it one of the more practical options if you're catching a show nearby. Weekend DJs and a buzzing bar keep the energy up into the evening.

Colonel Saab Trafalgar Square

Colonel Saab Trafalgar Square is a vibrant homage to India's diverse culinary traditions. Founded by Roop Partap Choudhary, the restaurant draws inspiration from his family's extensive travels across the Indian subcontinent. The menu features a blend of regional specialities and contemporary dishes, such as the Kolhapuri lamb chops and the Lucknowi aromatic lamb biryani, offering diners an authentic taste of India in the heart of London.

The interior reflects the Choudhary family's journey, adorned with Firozabad chandeliers and eclectic artworks collected during their travels. You can enjoy a variety of dining experiences, from the elegant mezzanine and private dining rooms to the lively bar and lounge areas, all set in a space that marries tradition with modernity, or venture over to its Holborn site if you're closer.

Machiya

A short walk from Trafalgar Square near Piccadilly Circus, Machiya is one of the most reliably good Japanese restaurants in the West End. The menu spans kara-age, wagyu beef katsu, tsukune and unaju alongside an extensive drinks list covering Japanese whisky, fruit sake and Sencha green teas. Save room for the patisserie section, the matcha mille crepe and chocolate yuzu cheesecake are genuinely worth the detour alone. Open from noon until late and bookable for groups, it's a solid choice whether you're after a quick lunch or a longer evening.

Champagne Charlies

Davy's Wine Flight

Tucked beneath the arches of Charing Cross Station, Champagne Charlies is barely a two-minute walk from Trafalgar Square and one of the most characterful spots in the area. The brick-lined vaults, run by Davy's Wine Merchants, house an extensive cellar worth lingering over, alongside classic British food made with seasonal produce. Whether you're after a post-gallery glass of something good, a wine flight before a show or a private dining room for a group, it punches well above its understated entrance.

Mezzogiorno by Francesco Mazzei

Just a ten minute stroll from Leicester Square, Mezzogiorno by Francesco Mazzei brings the soul of southern Italy to Central London. With dishes inspired by the warmth and bold flavours of Calabria, Puglia and Sicily, it's built for slow, Mediterranean dining.

Expect hearty homemade pastas, seared seafood, prime cuts of slow-cooked meat and deliciously indulgent desserts. The drinks list is just as dreamy, packing in fancy Italian fizz and fine wines.

116 Pall Mall

Right in the heart of the action, 116 Pall Mall is a stunning, versatile space built on the site of a former palace. This venue was designed by the architect who created Marble Arch and Brighton Pavilion, featuring glittering chandeliers, traditional features and original portraits of the Royal Family.

There's a stylish Champagne bar here in the basement, brought to you by Searcys, as well as plenty of restaurant space. As for the menu? Expect everything from roasted winter squash to Hereford beef burgers and pan-fried sea bass.

Fallow

One of the most acclaimed restaurants to open in London in recent years, Fallow sits in St James's Market, about a seven-minute walk from Trafalgar Square, and has picked up awards from GQ, Marie Claire and beyond since opening its permanent home in 2021. Founded by chefs Jack Croft and William Murray, the menu is built around sustainability and minimal waste, with a frequently changing selection of modern British dishes that make inventive use of underutilised ingredients. The cod's head, mushroom parfait and beef short rib are regular talking points.

J Sheekey Oyster Bar

One of London's most storied seafood institutions, J Sheekey Oyster Bar has been a West End fixture for over 150 years. Found on St Martin's Court just off Charing Cross Road, around ten minutes on foot from Trafalgar Square,  it's a natural choice for a special occasion dinner, a long post-gallery lunch or a leisurely pre-theatre evening. Expect responsibly sourced fish, signature oysters, shellfish and Champagne in a room lined with portraits of the luminaries who've dined here over the decades.

Dishoom Covent Garden

One of London's most beloved restaurants, Dishoom Covent Garden sits on St Martin's Lane, around an eight-minute walk from Trafalgar Square, and consistently ranks among the most sought-after tables in the West End. Inspired by the old Irani cafés of Bombay, the menu is built around crowd-pleasing classics: the legendary black dal, bacon naan rolls, ruby chicken and sizzling grills. Expect queues at peak times, but they move quickly and the buzzy two-floor space is worth it. One of the best casual options near Trafalgar Square for anyone who wants something genuinely special without a formal occasion attached.
