A list for the loved-up - and if you're going to do romance, Soho does it better than most. We're talking candlelit 18th-century townhouses, dim sum hidden behind unmarked doors, rooftop views over the city and Italian restaurants that have been setting the mood for decades. We've been covering Soho's restaurant scene for over 13 years, and this is our edit of the best romantic restaurants in Soho right now for a truly lush meal with a loved one.

The Devonshire

It's notoriously hard to get a table at, but trust us, your other half will be very impressed if you manage to secure a spot at The Devonshire. This gastropub was created by hospitality legends Oisin Rogers, Charlie Carroll and Ashley Palmer-Watts, and they've changed the game when it comes to gastro dining in London.

Spanning across two floors, this modern, stylish space is ideal for date night. The British menu features in-house butchery and baking, sourcing its ingredients from the UK where possible, from Scottish seafood to scallops from Devon. Munch on everything from pumpkin risotto to fillet of beef or lamb hotpot, paired with great quality beer or wine.

Ember Yard

£35 pp Asado Domingo - Sunday Roast

Specialising in modern Spanish and Italian cuisine, Ember Yard is a dreamy date night destination on Berwick Street. Take a seat on their green leather booths and admire the sultry, dark interiors, featuring hanging lightbulbs on ropes, wooden tables and a tiled bar.

Their state-of-the-art charcoal grill is the main focus of the menu, cooking up the likes of prawn pil pil, grilled chorizo picante with burnt pineapple and josper-roasted hispi cabbage. There are cracking cocktails to match, and for something extra special, nab a seat at their chef's table dining experience.

Opium

By far one of the sultriest restaurants in the whole city, Opium is a Gerrard Street gem that's hidden behind a jade green door and up a long, dark staircase. This Chinatown spot specialises in dim sum and unique cocktails that are bound to impress your date - think lobster or mushroom and truffle dumplings paired with signature sips.

Run by experienced bar owners Dre Masso and Eric Yu, you can expect big things here. The Asian-inspired decor perfectly blends traditional and modern trends, from the mismatched Chinese furniture to the floral wallpaper and romantic red lighting.

Sticks'n'Sushi Soho

Make your way to Beak Street to discover Sticks'n'Sushi's Soho outpost, ideal for a romantic date night. One of the most popular restaurant groups in Denmark, and rapidly growing across London, this Japanese restaurant features an exciting menu and sleek Scandinavian interiors.

Expect low lighting, dark furnishings and stylish, modern decor. Wondering what to eat? There's all sorts to choose from here, including pink Alaska uramaki, lamb and spring onion skewers or avocado maki, with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options across the menu. Topping it all off? A cracking selection of cocktails.

Miradora Rooftop Restaurant Tequileria

One of the best romantic restaurants Soho has to offer has got to be Miradora Rooftop Restaurant Tequileria, a chic space on Charing Cross Road that looks out over Central London from its floor-to-ceiling windows. The elevated destination can be found above the Assembly Hotel, boasting simple, modern interiors filled with colourful floral displays.

As for the menu, expect Asian-inspired small plates alongside pizza, pasta and grill dishes. We're talking yuzu chilli burrata and tempura shrimp, followed by truffle cacio e pepe, hot honey and chorizo pizza or seared wagyu steak.

Old Compton Brasserie

Reflecting the charm and vibrancy of Soho, Old Compton Brasserie is a buzzing venue that's full of colour. Think bright orange barstools and golden lighting, paired with murals on the walls and white marble-topped tables. Award-winning mixologist The Talented Mr Fox runs the bar, whipping up all sorts of creative signature cocktails named after famous locals like Regina Fong and Muriel Belcher. The warm glow of the golden lighting does a lot of the heavy lifting on date night.

Wondering what's on the menu? Expect British classics like roasted sea bream with ratatouille, lamb shank on a potato puree or a chilli and spring onion-topped cauliflower steak, as well as sumptuous Sunday roasts.

40 Dean Street

An intimate Italian restaurant in the heart of Soho, 40 Dean Street is a family-run destination that's ideal for date night. Expect dark, sultry interiors and traditional wooden furniture, as well as a charming outdoor terrace.

Tuck into a wide range of dishes, from chicken and saffron risotto to ricotta ravioli or pepperoni and jalapeno pizza, washed down with a wide variety of premium wines.

64 Old Compton Street

64 Old Compton Street is an intimate restaurant that's ideal for dates, sister to the beloved 40 Dean Street nearby. The small space is filled with bright blue walls and plush booth seating, and there are several outdoor tables too.

There's plenty to get stuck into, from spinach and ricotta ravioli to nduja pizza or homemade beef lasagne. To drink? There's a cracking selection of both wines and cocktails.

Mowgli London Charlotte Street

With its glowing fairy lights, exposed brick features and statement art, Mowgli well and truly ramps up the romance. Over on the menu, the dishes are just as dreamy.

Whether you're on your first date or your 500th, you can tuck into all kinds of indulgent Indian street food. We're talking treacle tamarind fries, Himalayan cheese toast, gunpowder chicken and Goan fish curry - all washed down with signature serves like the masala espresso martini and chilli mango margarita.

Yauatcha

Looking to share some dim sum with your date? Then head to Yauatcha, a romantic restaurant in Soho's Chinatown. Having boasted a Michelin star since 2005, this sleek space serves authentic Cantonese cuisine with some modern twists, including everything from edamame truffle dumplings to wagyu beef puffs and lobster balls with pumpkin sauce.

There's an Eastern-inspired cocktail list to make the most of as well, featuring flavours like lemongrass and oolong tea. You can enjoy this all while admiring the dimly lit restaurant, which flaunts dark decor, an aquarium running along one wall and cosy leather booths on the other.

INKO NITO

Created by the people behind Zuma, INKO NITO is a welcoming restaurant that practices 'unconventional' Japanese Robatayaki - meaning you can see your food being prepared over charcoal before you dine. The open robata grill takes centre stage here, and all the seats are levelled at different heights, so each person gets a unique perspective of the action.

The Broadwick Street destination serves cocktails on tap from £11, as well as a vast food menu. Think roasted pork belly, wagyu beef with wasabi sauce or spicy tuna tempura, and they also offer ten-course tasting menus starting at £49.50 per person.

Noble Rot Soho

On Greek Street, Noble Rot Soho occupies the former home of The Gay Hussar, a place where left-leaning politicians plotted over lunch and rumours of bugged dining rooms added to the legend. It's that kind of place: steeped in history, quietly confident and very good at making an evening feel like an occasion. The wine list is serious without being intimidating, the food is exactly what you want it to be, and the setting does the rest.

Dear Jackie

Hidden beneath the dazzling Broadwick Soho hotel, Dear Jackie is a sultry, theatrical hideaway made for romance. Crimson silk walls, floral-chintz booths and Murano glass lamps set the mood for lingering dinners and stolen glances.

Chef Harry Faddy (ex–The River Café) serves ingredient-led Italian plates that are as elegant as the setting - think La Latteria stracciatella with black figs and pistachio, duck ravioli with black winter truffle, and Scottish lobster Champagne risotto. A recent Michelin Guide addition, Dear Jackie pairs seductive lighting with Italian soul, creating a Soho dining experience that's intimate and indulgent.

Andrew Edmunds

Open since 1986, Andrew Edmunds is the romantic restaurant Soho has been quietly brilliant at for nearly four decades. An 18th-century townhouse on Lexington Street, all low ceilings, candlelight and wine bottles on the tablesm it's not trying to be anything other than exactly what it is, which is precisely why it works. The seasonal menu changes regularly but you can expect the kind of unfussy, heartwarming cooking that makes you want to linger.

Café Royal Grill

A Grade II-listed landmark on Regent Street, Café Royal Grill is a gorgeous destination for date night. The interiors are bound to impress, featuring red seating, paintings and golden, mirror-lined walls, as well as a grand piano right in the centre.

Treat your other half to quality British dishes like fillet steaks, Dorset blue lobster and globe artichoke Provençal. They also serve Sunday roasts and afternoon tea, alongside a wide variety of wines and cocktails.
