Surry Hills is home to an all-new Indian restaurant, serving age-old recipes with a modern twist. Foreign Return comes from the minds of Javed Khan, Gaurang Gahoi and Kunal Patel, with Siddharth Kalyanaraman heading up the kitchen. Having trained under the Michelin-starred Atul Kochhar and toured with the Aussie cricket team, he’s sure to have plenty of surprises in store.

The dining room features a large Taj Mahal mural, with dimmed lighting and rich mahogany tones that contrast to the royal blue and gold colour palette. When it comes to food? The idea is that each dish has a story behind it, an example being the 65 - spicy fried chicken inspired by Hotel Buhari’s original recipe for the dish.

There’s also curries unlike any others in Sydney; including nandu kuzhambu, a Chettinad-style blue swimmer crab curry, and laal maas slow-cooked spicy venison curry (a delicacy from Rajasthan’s royal kitchens). Meanwhile, drinks come from acclaimed mixologist Nitin Tewari, who has crafted cocktails to reflect the north, east, south and west of India. Think plays on the pina colada with South Indian flavours and Bollywood-inspired spritzes with cucumber and rose.
