Our Mildreds Victoria Review: The Iconic Plant-Based Restaurant's Newest Location

When you think of plant-based dining in London, chances are Mildreds springs to mind. Since their first restaurant in Soho opened in 1988, they've been paving the way for meat-free meals across the city, and they also made the switch from being vegetarian to 100% vegan in 2021 - making their menu even more accessible. There are six different venues to choose from, but it was their newest outpost in Victoria that was calling to me, having only opened in 2024.

DesignMyNight Reviews Mildreds Victoria

Close to the station, this glass-fronted restaurant was buzzing with diners. The welcoming space was filled with greenery and white brick walls, and we were led to a cosy corner booth that provided a view of the rest of the lively space. The waiters were all very friendly and helpful, from making recommendations to bringing us biodegradable wipes in between courses, and we felt at home here right away.

To begin with, I ordered a lime yuzu spritz (£10), made with sapling vodka, yuzu tonic and lime coriander shrub, giving it a tangy, almost savoury taste that I'd never come across before - but instantly loved. My partner chose a lychee rose martini (£12), a floral, gin-based blend with a layer of foam on top. This was also finished with an edible disc that read 'you're exactly where you need to be', making for an Instagram-worthy drink.

Choose from small plates and hearty mains on the Mildreds Victoria menu.

Their starters are perfect for sharing, and we picked the salsa macha hummus (£6.90), a deliciously smokey twist on the classic dip, sprinkled with candied pine nuts and pumpkin seeds in a pool of Mexican peanut chilli oil. We also ordered a portion of fluffy pita (£3.80) to scoop it up with. Secondly, the arancini rossi (£8) were filled with a plant-based take on chorizo made with fermented vegetables, with a crispy coating around the risotto balls and garlic aioli on top. These continued the smokey theme, thanks to the chipotle ketchup it was dipped in.

There was so much choice when it came to mains, ranging from British classics to exciting international dishes. I opted for a salsa verde burrito (£16), which contained the same imitation chorizo and red rice, coated in tomatillo sauce and flavourful garlic cream, with pico de gallo and a zesty lime slaw on the side. I also added on the optional guacamole-pea avo smash (£2) and it was well worth it, adding a fresh, creamy twist to the meal.

My boyfriend decided on the Korean fried chick+n burger (£16.90) - a Southern-fried patty that, even as a meat eater, he said tasted exactly like chicken. This was loaded up with kimchi, lettuce, red onion and a gochujang chilli sesame glaze, the only issue being that this went absolutely everywhere as you ate the burger.

The desserts at Mildreds are to-die-for.

Before dessert, we ordered another round of drinks: a second lychee rose martini (£12) and a genmaicha yuzu sour (£12), featuring sapling vodka, yuzu curacao, genmaicha and a bold citrus flavour.

We split two of their enticing sweet treats, my favourite being the chocolate on chocolate on chocolate (£12). This was a five-layer chocolate ganache mousse cake, served with chocolate ice cream, chocolate malt crumbs and, you guessed it, a warm chocolate sauce - rich and indulgent without bring too sickly. The sticky toffee pudding (£9.50) was another great pick: a spiced date sponge drizzled in toffee sauce, finished with rose nut praline, kataifi and saffron anglais, paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Both portions were huge, and we were suitably stuffed afterwards.

Overall: Mildreds London

I can see why this place is such a London institution when it comes to plant-based dining, and I'll certainly be back to try more of the Mildreds menu. There was a real personal feel to the service, and each dish was packed full of flavour, with none of the cruelty. There's a great variation of food on offer, inspired by multiple cuisines, making it a great choice for groups when you can't quite decide what you're in the mood for.
