Bar Soba Merchant City - Glasgow Restaurant Reviews

Published . By Cliodhna Cork.

Bar Soba Merchant city just happens to be the newest venue of this popular chain in Glasgow, and I was there to give the menu a good seeing to.

The Venue

Whether you choose to sit in the main section of the venue with its high ceiling, ambient lighting, and graffiti-like murals on the walls (all nodded towards cool, contemporary Eastern culture), or out in the covered square pretending that Glasgow’s weather allows for al fresco dining, you’ll be comfortable in this chilled out place. Your favourite 80s disco music gives the place a fun and friendly atmosphere. And while there was an easy pace when we went mid-week, it’s easy to imagine that things can get lively on the weekends.

Bar Soba Merchant City echoes the restaurant brand's urban, Asian edge.

The Food & Drink

You’ll be able to find all of your Asian favourites on the menu, from ramen to Pad Thai and even some subtle twists on your classic burger and chips.

I went for the vegetarian Nasi Goreng for £11 which is a rich mix of Indonesian vegetable fried rice, peanut sauce, fried egg and delicious buttery roti. The choice of ‘small plates’ and sides looked like tempting additions, but the main dish was more than enough for me. It is also possible to get sharing platters and there is a good selection of vegetarian and gluten free options making this a great place to bring any group of people.

The cocktail menu is one of the best things about this place. I opted for a ‘Lemongrass and Chilli Mai Tai’ which at £7 was a refreshing delight. There was just enough chilli to give this fruity mix a surprising kick. They can also turn almost any cocktail into a mocktail so no one misses out on the fun. I’ll definitely be coming back another time with a few friends to try the sharing cocktails which look dangerously good. There is also a good selection of wines and craft beers on tap. There are beers from all over the world here making this an exciting experience even for those not trying out the cocktail menu.

The vegetarian options at Bar Soba Merchant City are both fun, and plentiful throughout the menu.

Ambience and Clientele

The diners at Bar Soba were mostly younger groups, possibly reflecting their 2 for 1 student deal during the week, but people of all ages were present. It is clear from the menu that groups are more than welcome and there is a section upstairs that seemed perfect for bigger groups celebrating an occasion. Members of staff are friendly and familiar and more than happy to explain any of the dishes on the menu.

Bar Soba's mid-20s plight makes for a fun enviroment all week long.

Bar Soba truly provided the perfect mix of relaxed but top quality dining on fresh and exciting dishes in the city centre; and there is clearly something here for any palate and dietary requirement. It certainly caters to larger groups but is also a great place to come with a friend for a catch up over their extensive drinks menu.
