Our Review Of Patatino At The Hoxton: Edinburgh Meets The Amalfi Coast

You’ve probably heard of The Hoxton - let’s be honest, who hasn’t? Staying at the iconic boutique hotel has been on my bucket list for ages, so when I found out they’d finally opened their first hotel in Scotland, I knew I had to see what it was all about by visiting their on-site Italian restaurant

On a sunny summer’s day, I hopped on a train to Edinburgh to meet my mum at Patatino, which opened earlier this year, serving up all the dreamy flavours of the Amalfi Coast.

DesignMyNight's Review Of Patatino At The Hoxton

As I made my way through the hotel, the Hoxton’s signature style shone through - chic, relaxed and full of character. Passing the bar and into the restaurant, I couldn't help but feel like I’d stepped into somewhere special, yet relaxed and inviting. Think Gatsby’s mansion with a touch of the Amalfi Coast - that’s exactly the feeling Patatino’s interiors capture. Plush floral booths, pink walls, colourful menus, and faux lemon trees set the scene, while the comforting aromas of classic Italian dishes drift from the kitchen.

Once we'd finished admiring the surroundings and complimenting the enticing drinks menu, we ordered a couple of aperitifs. When in Italy, right? My mum’s a negroni (£9) girl through and through, so it was a must here. You just know when it’s going to be a good one, and we were proven right. The menu also mentioned it was on draught, courtesy of the hotel's friends at Electric Spirit Co, a superb Edinburgh-based distillery.

Now, I love an Aperol, but the Select (£12) on the menu caught my eye, described as 'a Venetian classic, the OG spritz'. Our lovely server, Francesco, explained that it was a red Italian liqueur, similar to Aperol but slightly more bitter. I’m a fan of bitter cocktails, so I was excited to try it - and it did not disappoint. One sip and I was daydreaming about sitting on a sunny balcony in Capri; the drink quickly became a new summer favourite, that's for certain.

Look forward to thirst-quenching aperitifs and tempting plates of pasta.

After finishing our aperitifs, we ordered our food along with a bottle of prosecco Superiore (£40). With a little reason to celebrate, it seemed like the perfect moment to toast the day. Now came the tricky part… pizza, pasta or antipasti. Is there a harder decision than this? Though these were not your traditional plates, as the menu blended classic Italian dishes with a Scottish twist by using local ingredients, a delicious ode to Edinburgh. Picture haggis on pizza or locally sourced seafood, adding a Scottish spin to traditional pasta.

I ordered the tagliolini (£23), a delightful mix of shellfish bisque, Eyemouth crab, and a hint of Amalfi lemon. This pasta dish was pure decadence - dressed white crab was piled on top, with the pasta served on a vibrant, colourful plate. It was just as beautiful to look at as it was to taste. Across the table, my mum’s trofie (£16) was just as visually impressive - and delicious. With fresh basil pesto, beans, potatoes, and pecorino, it was the perfect summer pasta dish.

To go alongside our pasta, we couldn’t resist a couple of sides to share. The tomato and bread salad (£6.50) hit the spot perfectly. I’m a huge fan of panzanella and this one was fresh, vibrant and full of flavour. The rocket and aged parmesan (£6.50) was also a lovely, light side to round out the meal.
