Behind the Decks: Gareth Chubb

Each week we get behind the decks with the very best resident and roving DJs from across the Manchester club scene, chatting about the newest releases, the best clubs and the picks of the month.

Gareth Chubb Micron

We've interviewed some of the city's brightest and best, the brains behind the best club nights we've ever seen. Up-and-coming DJs, residents and promoters from across the city. This week's guest has been an imperative cog in our clubbing calendar for years. He brought Joshua Brooks to the forefront of underground clubbing and then went on to give Gorilla incredible debut year, helping make it the clubbing hub that it is today. The founder and head honcho of one of the longest running and loved independent club nights in the city, Micron, and one of the most charming chaps you'll ever meet. Ahead of the biggest Micron to date, (with Jooris Voorn this weekend in Gorilla), we get Behind The Decks with Gareth Chubb.

Name: Gareth Chubb

Age: 29

Club Night: Micron

What do you love most about the clubbing scene in Manchester? The amount of independent nights there are. Also, even though Manchester is pretty big, you'll usually find the same people at all the underground nights so it's like a family.

What makes Manchester so important to the UK club scene?

The history of the place in terms of electronic music, venues and nights. I won't bore you with the usual names 'cos everyone does that in every interview ever. It's produced a whole lot of talented producers in the last few years

What’s one of the best club nights you have ever been to in Manchester?

Old: Naive Melody - it was like a family. New: Mute! - it's like a family.

Favourite place to party in Manchester?

#CP2 of course, though I think it's much better that I'm now partying there as a guest these days.

Favourite Manchester bar for pre-club drinks? Gorilla, as then you can go straight into the club after. The DJs at the weekend are always on point, especially Matt Cox.

What's your favourite tune of all time to hear in a club? Laurent Garnier 'Man with the Red Face' - it's also (probably) my favourite electronic and techno tune of all time. My favourite moment ever ever ever was walking into DC10 for the first time, on our first trip to Ibiza in 2005. Went straight from Space to Bora Bora and then to DC10 at 8am, walked in and it was pitch black, this tune was just starting. We had to all hold on to each other (about 10 of us in a row) as you couldn't see anything. Then, about four hours later they opened the terrace up which, of course, is the best space in the whole of the planet.

If you could throw a club night with any two DJs going back to back in your own living room for 20 of your mates, who would you choose?

Richie Hawtin b2b Ricardo Villalobos. I've already seen it so many times before, but it's always hilarious watching Hawtin kick off when Villalobon (our pet name for him) gets too smashed early doors then comes back HOURS later looking fresh and carrying on.

Pick of the month?

Well, as you may or may not know, I've retired from full time promoting and so am way out of touch (and it feels good!) I'll go for Bicep all night long at Gorilla on the 21st. Also, anything that Stevie Wonderland is doing at the moment. Track would have to be Claude Vonstroke 'Dood'.

Finally, if you could choose one club in the world to go to for the rest of your life, which would it be?

DC10, Ibiza.
