What they say:

Set in the historic arches of Southwark's Old Union, Bala Baya is bringing Israeli food south of the river. By day they will serve pittas with a number of stuffings, including stews and slow cooked meats, with homemade sauces and salads. All of these can be taken away. At night, they will be serving the finest traditional dishes from Israel, with dishes like salt-baked blackened salmon with tahini. It will also be London's first Gazoz bar, a carbonated soft drink typically served in Tel Aviv infused with a number of flavours, such as watermelon and red basil.

What we say:

Bala Baya has the added bonus of being a place to grab a bite for lunch in the busy business district of Southwark with the opportunity to return for a delicious sit-down meal afterwards. All the pitas are handmade in their special pitta oven and, while the variety of Israeli fillings are numerous, you could also opt for a fish finger sandwich, which is served Israeli style. The culture of Tel Aviv shines through in its dinner menu also, with delectable dishes of tea-smoked aubergine with harissa and date glaze with a spicy nut crumb. Their cocktail menu has been crafted by an award-winning bartender, meaning we're treated to inventive flavours, like a 'truffle sour' with honey syrup, lemon and truffle oil.
