Our Review Of Tangra Soho: An Indo-Chinese Newcomer Serving Vegetarian Dishes

After a slightly lacklustre effort from supermarkets on the Veganuary front for 2026, I decided to turn to restaurants for my fix of plant-based dining this month. Tangra is a new Indo-Chinese restaurant in Soho that opened in November 2025, with a modern menu that's entirely vegetarian and largely vegan. Here, street food, classic dishes and bold new flavour combinations come together creating a lineup of dishes that you won't find anywhere else.

This place was created by chef Nikesh Sawant, formerly of Mildreds and Mallow - two giants of meat-free dining in the city. It's inspired by Kolkata's Hakka Chinese community, and they're committed to using only the finest ingredients - think fresh spices from India and sauces made from scratch.

Ambience & We Think Perfect For

  • Atmosphere: the interiors are just as bold as the menu here, with a vibrant red and yellow colour scheme running throughout. Despite it being the first week of January, the restaurant was packed, and there was a real buzz to the intimate space. That didn't stop the staff taking the time to be extra friendly and helpful though, and we felt truly looked after during our meal.
  • Perfect For: small groups, couples, plant-based diners.

Menu Highlights

Food⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Lolli-popcorn chick'n (£9) - a small plate that really packed a punch. We both agreed that this was our favourite dish of the night, featuring tender, bite-sized chunks of meat-free chicken coated in a sticky Bombay chilli sauce. The garlic pickle mayo that it was served with was also incredibly moreish.
  • Bazaar Momo (£9.50) - these Nepalese dumplings came either steamed or Jhol-style, and we chose the latter, swimming in a creamy broth made of tomato, peanuts and lemongrass. The filling was mixed vegetables in a cream sauce, and each juicy bite delivered exactly the right amount of spice, thanks to a drizzle of chilli oil on top.
  • Chilli paneer (£10.50) - I was slightly apprehensive about this one, as the waiter asked 'how are you with spice?' after we ordered it. However, it wasn't too hot at all, and I found it very flavourful. The soft cubes of cheese were mixed with fried peppers and onions, and it paired well with our side of burnt garlic rice (£7).
  • Chocolate biscuit caramel sea salt soft serve (£6.75) - we cooled things down with some dessert, and they've got a range of vegan soft serve ice creams to choose from. This flavour was recommended to us and it didn't disappoint - the huge swirl of chai-spiced vanilla was loaded with speculoos, chocolate syrup and caramel biscuit crumbs, perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Drink: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Soho 65 (£11) - this reasonably priced cocktail featured lychee, lemon and prosecco, with a mystery House '65 Syrup that brought it all together. The concoction was sweet with a zesty kick, and I was quick to order a second round.

Our Overall Experience At Tangra Soho

DesignMyNight Review Out Of 5: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I always love to see a new vegetarian restaurant thriving, and that's exactly how I'd describe this place. The restaurant was bustling throughout our visit, and Tangra's menu kept us intrigued and satisfied throughout. A particular highlight was the popcorn chicken-inspired starter, and I'd recommend trying a dessert too. Overall, it was reasonably priced and delicious, and I'll almost certainly be coming back.
