Next in line in our “Story Of” series, we explore the works of John Lee Hooker, the multi-Grammy award winning bluesman who has become one of the best loved artists in the blues canon.
This April, join us as The Illinois Players pay homage to the inimitable artist with a journey through his musical catalogue, from the dusty planes of Tennessee to the palm tree-lined streets of LA with a carefully compiled set list of John Lee’s greatest hits.
John Lee Hooker himself is a fabled figure with a turbulent past. A man of unique and unmatched talent, his meteoric rise set him apart from crowd and marked him as a blues master now firmly imprinted in music history, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His early career is marked by a stream of superlative blues records, which count among them “Boogie Chillen", “Dimples”, “One, Bourbon One Scotch, One Beer”.
Come the later half of the 20th century, as an established founder of modern blues, he achieved recognition in the form of four separate Grammy awards, most notably for his Pop collaboration with Van Morrison.
He passed away in 2001, not before being honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
