El Gato Negro - Open Now
Popular Spanish restaurant El Gato Negro announced that it was leaving its Exchange Flags site earlier this year, and now fans can rejoice, as they've confirmed that their new location will be on Castle Street. This building once housed Viva Brazil, which closed at the beginning of 2025.
Chef patron Simon Shaw has earned Michelin recognition and AA Rosettes over the years, with a menu that features the likes of aged Manchego, charcuterie boards and hispi cabbage. The new space will be totally transformed to fit the style of El Gato Negro, though you can expect the same delicious tapas from their original site that we all know and love.

They're serving a daily breakfast of fresh Italian pastries, as well as a more traditional English menu. Main plates include delicious pizzas, pastas and more - and there's even a five-course set menu that offers the very best of their cuisine. There's a brand new spot on Gradwell Street: Hume. This sustainable restaurant is all about healthy eating and doing good for the planet - a tribute from owner Allan Eves to his late mother. His philosophy is all about ingredients that do good for the body while having a minimal impact on the planet, with sustainable alcohol and coffee on the menu too.
Their food offerings include Thai red curry with sticky wild rice, king oyster mushroom burgers and the ultimate beans on toast, with both breakfast and lunch available. They're also working to promote healthier living across the city, by reaching out to schools, universities, councils and the NHS, as well as private organisations.
Hume is all about sustainability and healthy eating.
Pilgrim - Opening Summer 2025
After a four-year hiatus, My Million Pound Menu winner Jamie Duffield's restaurant Pilgrim will be returning to Liverpool, laying down its roots on Allerton Road. The Bib Gourmand-winning, 24-cover space will feature an open kitchen, terrace and small green area where shrubs and herbs will be grown and used in cooking.
Inspired by the Camino de Santiago (which runs through Spain, Portugal and France), the menu will be overseen by chef Jack Williams and include the likes of butterflied mackerel with guindilla sauce, alongside heritage potatoes, caramelised onions and Serra de Estrela cheese, followed by fig leaf ice cream.
One of the best new restaurants Liverpool has to offer, Pilgrim is making a comeback.
