Birmingham Drag & Burlesque Festival presents:
Clowning For Cabaret (Foundations Of Devising And Act Creation)
with Coco Deville
A playful and accessible workshop for performers who want to
discover where to begin with an act, develop existing ideas, or
deepen their creative process.
No previous clowning/dance/performance experience is necessary.
Drawing on my own experience as a professional cabaret artist with
over 20 years experience, alongside clowning practices and devising
techniques, I will share a practical framework for generating
material and building acts from the ground up. Through
exaggeration, imagination, physicality and character exploration,
participants will be invited to experiment with a process that I
have developed through my own creative practice. Together, we’ll
explore how characters inhabit space, how our bodies communicate
emotions to an audience and how embracing vulnerability, curiosity
and silliness can become powerful creative tools. Differing from
beginning with music or choreography, we’ll focus on creating a
unique universe where our newly formed characters exist and how
they can connect with an audience. From these foundations,
participants will begin to devise material and uncover pathways
towards creating original cabaret acts. Suitable for performers of
all levels, including drag, burlesque, cabaret and
interdisciplinary artists, this workshop offers a supportive
environment to take risks, play generously and leave with practical
tools for devising

Participants should wear comfortable clothing so they can move in,
bring note taking equipment and water.
