2026 has been, for me, the year of the staycation. As a born-and-bred Londoner (we're a deprived folk), I've really enjoyed exploring various corners of the UK and soaking up the natural beauty of the British countryside, which is so often overlooked in exchange for trips abroad: Hambledon, the Cotswolds, the Brecon Beacons, the Lake District have all seen me galavanting across fields of wheat (eat your heart out, Theresa May), forest-drenched paths and mountainous ranges. But my appetite for rolling hills and luscious copses still hungers on - leading me to one of my more recent excursions to the family-owned The Crown in Bildeston, Suffolk.
Dating back to 1495 (and becoming an inn in the mid-17th century, before a refurb in 2022), the stout, timber-framed building is incredibly inviting in every sense of the word. A pub with original features, lovingly restored, including a roaring hearth fireplace? Check. Rooms that mix plush furnishings with gorgeous, low-slung wooden beams? You betcha. And fresh, seasonal produce sourced from the nearby Nedging Hall Estate (who runs The Crown), whipped up by the talented Executive Chef Greig Young? Oh, yes. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. This, and more, has earned The Crown numerous awards (think Best Pub Serving Game 2025, Suffolk Pub of the Year 2025 and more), and I couldn't help myself but book a room there for a weekend getaway.

The Crown offers cosy rooms and dining.

- Area: Suffolk
- Hotel Type: pub with rooms, cosy, gastropub, dog-friendly, family-friendly
Ambience & We Think Perfect For
- Atmosphere: located in the sleepy, rural village of Bildeston, The Crown is a gorgeous country pub that acts as both the perfect pitstop on a long, scenic walk (complete with a sun-soaked garden for a real ale and incredible food - more on that later) and overnight stays that are cosy and luxurious in equal measure. Dating back to the 15th century, the building aches with character, from the charmingly wonky facade to the gorgeous low beams, vintage knick-knacks lining the walls and a huge hearth where real fires warm your cockles during the colder months. Plus with beautiful surrounding countryside and plenty of local attractions a short drive or bus away, there's plenty to do in the area
- Perfect For: cosy romantic getaways, walking holidays, countryside escape, trips with the dog

Room Quality & Comfort

Our room (left) and the pub downstairs (right) were equally cosy.
Room: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We stayed in one of the more luxurious Orchard Rooms, which offer countryside charm with modern amenities; think a king-sized four poster bed and plush velvet sofa combined with beautifully wonky wooden beams and nature-themed artwork along the walls. The bathroom was also standout, complete with a large bath and soft, pillowy towels. I also have to say, check-in was seamless - warm and friendly - and as we had arrived before check-in, they kindly let us leave our bags so we could pop out to explore the local area.
Dining Highlights

Plaice (left) and venison (right).
Boasting both a pub and dining room, there's plenty of space to eat at The Crown - although it somehow still feels cosy and intimate. We chose to sit in the dining room, which was wonderfully charming, with vintage books and paintings lining the walls, not to mention antique furniture and flickering candlelight adding to the allure. It felt perfect for everything from a long, relaxing lunch to romantic dinners and family feasts.
Sourcing the majority of their produce from Nedging Hall, these guys take their estate-to-plate ethos seriously. You can expect everything from wild game from the estate to fresh fish from the local coast, transformed into simple but perfectly executed dishes that truly celebrate their ingredients. Funnily enough, I took one of my best friends who works in food sustainability, and she was heavily impressed by their eco efforts. And this was some of the best food either of us had all year; I'm not kidding.
Please note, the menu is highly seasonal, so dishes below may not be available on your visit, but are an example of the style of food they offer.
Food: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Heritage tomato, peach, goat curd salad - this was just excellent. A medley of lightly charred cherry tomatoes, that were deliciously tart and sweet (definitely none of that watery tomato nonsense you can often find in supermarkets) and succulent peach, paired with generous dollops creamy, tangy goats cheese. It was made all the merrier with additions of herb oil and croutons, delivering extra freshness and texture
- Venison haunch, peppercorn sauce, rosti, Nedging runner beans - holy moly, stop the presses, this is what it's all about. Sourced from the estate, the venison was faultless and cooked with such expert care - juicy and rare in the middle, with a sumptuous outer char. The sauce was perfectly balanced, the rosti crisp yet buttery, and the beans a perfect al dente
- Grilled & crispy plaice, butter beans, broad beans and peas - the face my friend made when she took her first bite - pure foodie ecstasy. The outer crumb was superbly crisp, while the fish was so soft it melted in the mouth, and it all came together like a piece of art with a rich pea sauce (which added bites of sweetness) and soft, delicate beans
Drink: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
There's something to suit all tastes here; local ales (including from Mauldons Brewery, also operated by Nedging Hall Estate), draught lagers, cocktails and an extensive wine list spanning the globe have all been carefully selected.
- Elderflower Cooler - off the sauce this weekend, we both opted for this alcohol-free cocktail that was light and refreshing, an ideal tipple for an equally well-balanced and delightful meal
Our Overall Experience At The Bildeston Crown In Suffolk
DesignMyNight Review Out Of 5: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Crown in Bildeston is a fantastic celebration of what the Suffolk countryside can offer: a building that has been lovingly looked after, with gorgeous original features and luxurious touches, a kitchen that puts its heart and soul into produce-led dishes that sing of the seasons, and incredibly warm, friendly staff who look after you like family. It was also the perfect base to explore local walking trails, and we even hopped to the Food Museum in nearby Stowmarket which was very interesting. I've already been hammering on about it to all my friends; the restaurant deserves a special visit in its own right.
