Review Of Luna Omakase: London's Tiny But Mighty 12-Seater Restaurant

The pressure of organising a celebratory dinner can be... a challenge. What will they be in the mood for? How far do we want to travel from home? Is there availability? Will the restaurant sing them happy birthday? My partner had another 365 days around the sun recently and he's had going to an omakase experience on his list long enough for me to know better. Having been to Los Mochis when it first opened in 2024, I had a hunch Luna Omakase (the restaurant inside the restaurant) wouldn't let us (or him) down.

Opening a little over a year ago (in March 2025), Luna Omakase prides itself as being the first of its kind in London due to its 12-course Edomae-style tasting menu. What's even more special is that it's set in an intimate 12-seater restaurant where the menu choice is completely taken out of your hands. Nestled within Los Mochis, it's yet another triumph from restauranteur Markus Thesleff, and a part of his growing empire: Juno Omakase, Sale e Pepe and MA/NA (which just opened this month).

Ambience & We Think Perfect For

  • Atmosphere: It's suggested that you arrive to Los Mochis about 30 minutes before your experience starts. A clever way to ensure people don't arrive late (there's always one). But, perched at the oval bar with a wine in hand, this only built on our intrigue and anticipation. A little after 8.30pm, we were taken down a corridor where a wooden set of doors slid open revealing a chocolate-box room, with clean aesthetics and a backdrop to London's inky skyline. After taking our seats, it dawned on us that sitting in a room with 10 strangers can be slightly... awkward. The first 30 minutes felt stilted but after the 'pressure' died down, the atmosphere livened up, and the attention - rightly so - went towards the incredibly talented chefs. In between walking us through how to make sushi rice and wielding blow torches, it was quickly apparant that these chefs were central to the night. They provided theatre, enjoyable conversation and more importantly - some of the highest quality sushi in the city.
  • Perfect for: birthday dinner, dining someone special for an anniversary or a rather dazzling date night if you don't mind splashing the cash

Menu Highlights

Food⭐⭐⭐⭐

Luna Omakase is one of London’s smallest restaurants, seating only 12 diners. It has two sittings per day, and across the three-hour experience ordering is completely out of your hands. It's easily one of London’s most unique settings we've been to and these are the dishes we raved about the most on the way home.

  • Umber jack - what an opening plate to kick start our night. Each person was plated up two generous slices of umber jack. As delicate as the fish was, it followed an orchestra of flavour thanks to a rich but balanced orange ponzu sauce. My tip? Let go of embarrassment and slurp up the remaining sauce. It’s like drinking holy water.
  • Sea trout - Luna Omakase work with local produce as much as possible. For this dish, the trout was sourced directly from fishmongers in Cornwall. The trout had a gorgeous buttery texture with extra flavour released from the team theatrically throwing five or so seconds of fire towards the perfect mounds of sushi. Slightly warm in your mouth, the fish dissolved mercilessly between the sweet fragments of sushi rice.
  • Bluefin tuna belly tartar - our favourite dish of the night and one of Luna’s signature plates for a reason. The team use leftover sushi rice to create homemade crackers called Shari. The rice is dehydrated with nori sheets and then deep-fried to add extra sweet and salty flavours. These long bubbly sheets are then used to scoop up fatty tuna belly from a silver caviar tin that’s been blended with citrus truffle soy, Oscietra caviar, and fresh wasabi.
  • Avocado taco - this dish took me pleasantly by suprise. After a lot of punchy flavours, this avocado taco in sesame-style paper was a welcomed palate cleanser with a zingy avocado sauce and crunchy matchsticks of cucumber.

Drink: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

There's an option for you to pair your meal with sake or wine. Although sake is the more traditional pairing, we played it safe with wine, but we were zoomed around the globe with glasses from Japan to France.

  • 2021 Château Mercian Chardonnay Rivalis Left Bank – I avoid Chardonnay like Bridget Jones avoids that creepy uncle in the original movie, and although it wasn't my favourite pairing of the night, I happily finished the glass. It comes from the oldest winery in Japan and carried citrusy flavours with hints of grapefruit on the nose.
  • Pascal Jolivet Pouilly-Fumé Les Terres Blanches 2023 – a French wine from the Loire Valley that cut through some of the richer and fattier plates with minerality and a hint of spice.

Our Overall Experience At Luna Omakase

DesignMyNight Review Out Of 5: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I know what what you're wondering: did they sing happy birthday? They did. The twist is that the cake was for someone else. My partner despises public attention and after organising big sparklers on a dessert in 2021, I can safely say I won't be walking down that garden path again. That aside, there's no doubt that Luna Omakase is a fantastic place to bring your partner for a special occasion. The room was littered with couples, solo dates and some friends, too. It lived up to the high expectations; and let's be honest - for £240 a pop, it needs to. The craft behind the counter and the knowledge you hear makes you really appreciate and savour what's laid in front of you. If you want a meal that will become a core memory, you can bet your bottom dollar that this omakase experience will deliver.
