The Importance of Being Anxious (preview)

Hal Cantor is a middle-aged, white cis-gendered American male (but don’t hold that against him). The last thing he’d ever be accused of being is privileged and powerful. Besides, there are many more things about Hal that are problematic.

Like he came out as gay. Late. Very late. But then again, he always thought of himself as a 60/40 guy. The problem was: he didn’t know the 60. His explorations of trying to figure that out — what today might be called fluid sexuality or bisexuality — is just one of the many subjects explored in The Importance of Being Anxious, which you might call a coming-of-middle-age comedy.

Anxiety. There’s a thing we can all relate to. If you’re Hal’s therapist, you’d call it acute (though Hal prefers the term, endearing). Hal’s battles with anxiety and its impact on romantic life, career, family, relationships — forms the thematic heart of the play.

Anxiety, like many mental health issues, comes about through triggers. Fortunately, Hal doesn’t have many (Income inequality. The Republican Party. Hypocrisy (see Republican Party). Racism. Ageism. Anti-semitism. Sexism. Anti-vaccism. Cronyism. Brexitism. Evangelicals (see Hypocrisy). Climate change. Suburban Jewishness. Sequels (Godfather II exception). Remakes. *One-Man shows (*Rather: one-person shows).

On a more serious note, Hal’s out-front, breathtakingly honest, and often hilarious look at himself — and the state of his mental health as it pertains to grief, shame, sexuality, popular culture, religion, and career (Hal writes TV for Hollywood, that most equitable and non-triggering of places) — is spot-on to our moment; to the times we’re living in.

The Importance of Being Anxious — by its very form — demonstrates The Importance of Theatre and its unique ability to reflect life back to us, warts ’n all, with humour and heart. And lots of gay sex.
