Something new

“nationalism”
u.u [Ellen Furey and Malik Nashad Sharpe]

"nationalism" is not about nationalism and more about reaching
reaching for each other in ways that are genuine to our bodies
reaching across the borders that define where they think we begin and end
it is about dancing
it is about how dancing is a radical provocation
it is about looking at the possibilities to exist with each other amidst the abject derision of the moment now
and its about the abjection left on our bodies by oppressive gender systems

About Artists:

Last Yearz Interesting Negro is the solo project of Jamila Johnson-Small, she makes shows, working with in-between spaces – things that exist in and through cracks in time/memory/attention – with syncopation, trance states, internal narratives, intensities, electronic music, and a love of dancing on the spot. In her performances, bodies of public and performer(s) are navigated as object, animal, human, machine, environment, energy, to build atmospheric landscapes created by the live unfolding of the tensions between things that produce meaning.

Rowdy SS is a London born and based artist.

Often working at the intersection of sound/music and dance/movement alongside making videos; his works have delved into love, explored the societal implications of being, first a black boy then man and mined life to share his vision of said life.

His current project is a work in progress that includes music, video and dance and looks at familial death and the aftermath.

He was previously a member of Atari Teenage Riot, a Berlin based noise band and has worked with numerous artists and makers such as Lee Scratch Perry, Ron Arad, Eska and Matthew Herbert and organistaions such as Slade School of Fine Arts and Roundhouse, Camden running workshops for young people, about which he is passionate.

u.u is Ellen Furey (CA) and Marikiscrycrycry (UK)--it is their performance practice built to interrogate the limits of their current solo practices but as a collaboration.

Ellen Furey is an artist based in Montreal, Canada. She works with a range of makers including Daniel Léveillé Danse, Dana Michel, Montréal Danse, Fréd Gravel, Nicholas Cantin, Benjamin Kamino, Christopher Willes, Amanda Acorn, Simon Portigal, Robert Abubo, Susanna Hood, Marten Spangberg, Adam Kinner, Alicia Grant, Anouk Thériault, Winnie Ho, Wants and Needs (Sasha Kleinplatz and Andrew Tay), Stephen Thompson and Malik Nashad Sharpe. She spent three transformative years as a company member in and out of Dancemakers (Michael Trent, Benjamin Kamino, Emi Forster, Amelia Ehrhardt).

Marikiscrycrycry is the performance project of London-based choreographer and artist Malik Nashad Sharpe (b. 1992, New York). They make emotional choreographies that are less like descriptors of themes and more like worlds in themselves. Their work deals primarily with the social imprints and inflections left on the body, existentialism, the necessity to proliferate pro-Queer and pro-Black aesthetics under neoliberal hegemonies, choreography as an expanded formal proposition, and allostatic load. Originally making work in DIY contexts across New York City (primarily in Brooklyn), their choreography considers aesthetic production and situational politics as radical forms of production. They consider choreography as a tool to suggest ulterior and subversive critiques of an otherwise phobic and unaccommodating world.
