This salon is part of the Science Fiction Series at London's exclusive Century Club

In 1880, when H.G. Wells left school at the age of thirteen he looked destined for obscurity. Defying expectations, he became one of the most famous writers in the world.

Join biographer Dr. Michael Sherborne, vice-president of the HG Wells Society, to hear of the strange life of one of the greatest Victorian Visionaries, a man who remained active into the era of the atomic bomb (which he predicted by thirty years) and who wrote some of our best loved and most influential tales of speculative fiction including The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine and The invisible Man.

In this talk, historian Dr Sherborne will put Wells’s scientific romances into the context of his versatile career as an author, explaining how he came to write books such as The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds and considering what understanding of life lies behind them. Sherborne will then examine how a hundred years after they were written Wells’s futuristic visions may have dated but remain compelling.
