A Live, Illustrated Zoom Talk with Historian Sarah Wise
In this illustrated talk via the Zoom platform, historian Sarah Wise investigates London's Dark Trade in 19th-Century cadavers and takes us on a tour of the lesser-known graveyards that were particularly vulnerable to the bodysnatchers.
Remaining buried and intact posed a significant challenge for the deceased in the 19th century due to the high demand for cadavers by surgeons for dissection. A recently exhumed corpse could command as much as 20 guineas, surpassing the yearly wage of a factory worker.
Sometimes the bodysnatchers, like Burke and Hare in Edinburgh, did not wait for their victims to die and be buried but took matters into their own hands.
Sarah will tell the tragic tale of 'The Italian Boy’ A case of murder so grim, that it led to legislation that marked the beginning of the end of body snatching in Britain.
Tickets £6 including a 20% donation to the Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery.
