"Trinity Buoy Wharf Live!" presents Jazz Wednesdays, featuring Jo Harrop & British Standard Time -“The Great British Songbook”

Jo Harrop – vocals
Alex Webb – keyboard
Rest of band TBC

Velvet-voiced Jo Harrop and pianist/arranger Alex Webb present an evening of British songwriting from the jazz-era masters Ray Noble and Eric Maschwitz to music theatre writers like Antony Newley, Leslie Bricusse and Lionel Bart, from the pop giants Lennon & McCartney to Elvis Costello and Amy Winehouse, Harrop and Webb mine a rich seam of material and present it in a cool, contemporary jazz format.

Expect classics like These Foolish Things, The Very Thought Of You, As Long As He Needs Me, Who Can I Turn To, Almost Blue and Norwegian Wood as well as forgotten gems by John Dankworth and Victor Feldman – along with some carefully-chosen originals and a couple of surprises, presented by a top-flight jazz group.

Durham-born jazz singer Jo Harrop ‘was born to sing jazz!’ according to Blues & Soul magazine.  Her warm, intimate voice reflects her childhood absorption of the records of Billie Holiday, Anita O’Day, Julie London & Peggy Lee, the vocal masters who inspired her to sing.  In the pop world she has provided backing vocals for major names including Neil Diamond, LeAnn Rimes and Enrique Iglesias; her co-written song 'Little Laughter' was recorded by Acoustic Alchemy on their album 'Radio Contact'.  She has worked all the London jazz venues including the Jazz Café where she supported The Blind Boys of Alabama; in 2016 she guested on the album ‘Call Me Lucky’ by Alex Webb & The Copasetics, delivering what jazzman.com called ‘a smoothly sumptuous vocal’ on the Webb original ‘End of The Affair’, with the album receiving four-star reviews in the Guardian and Evening Standard.   Her own CD ‘Songs for the Late Hours’ was released in 2019.

‘A singing sensation.... her voice is amazing’ - Bebop Spoken Here Blog on Jo Harrop.

Alex Webb is a pianist, arranger and songwriter whose songs have been performed by many UK and international jazz artists.  Known particularly for working with vocalists, he has also created and produced a series of words-and-music shows including Strayhorn the Songwriter, Charlie Parker on Dial, Fever: Jo Harrop sings Peggy Lee and Cafe Society Swing, which has enjoyed theatre runs in London and New York where it won a New York Times ‘Critic’s Pick’.  He recently co-composed and produced the musical Stormy: The Life of Lena Horne with actor/writer Camilla Beeput and has been touring with the show ‘A Portrait of Cannonball’, celebrating saxophonist Cannonball Adderley.  He has also worked in music radio, music publishing, at live music venues and as a news and features journalist.  ‘Plays the piano as nimbly as Fred Astaire dances’ – Theeasy.com
