”London's Aydenne Simone ('Queen of Swing') sings Sarah Vaughan"

Acclaimed jazz and blues singer Aydenne Simone (dubbed 'Queen of Swing') has been wowing audiences for nearly 30 years. Jazz is her thing, and swing jazz is her life!

This show in the EFG London Jazz Festival pays tribute to one of the giants of the jazz vocal, Sarah Vaughan, 'Sassy', or 'The Divine One', as she was nicknamed. When Aydenne was just 6 years old her father (also a jazz musician) gave her a Sarah Vaughan album, “You're Mine You” produced by the great Quincy Jones and Aydenne promptly fell in love with Sarah’s voice and jazz. The rest is history.

For Aydenne to be in a position to celebrate her number one idol and her biggest jazz vocal influence in this special concert, Aydenne feels is such a privilege. Aydenne sings and swings to perfection, her voice moving effortlessly from beguiling, bold, brassy to bluesy, always with the greatest respect for the lyrics and the melody she so wonderfully projects.

Davies’ trumpet and Olly Chalk’s slinky, punchy, propulsive piano adorned the solid rhythmic pulse of Tom Dring’s bass and Gwilym Jones’ drums.

Gwilym Jones – Drums

"There’s something about the way she manipulates those chords which is just incredible….. Aydenne Simone is generous with her musicians, giving them ample solo space and indeed, her own performance at this Sarah Vaughan gig was more like a soloist in a quintet than a singer with a backing band, and the songs were like blowing sessions. Her group is a tight, expert unit capable of delivering jazz on many levels."

"They makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck!"

”She is one of the few singers around today who is not a copy of someone else”
Giles Peterson – BBC Radio 1

"A fantastic evening --such talented musicians and so wonderful together ---- cannot be bettered ----- would travel to the ends of the earth to listen to them."
