Following the success of the Unconventional Dinner, Barrel & Forks are back with Gladiator's dinner, in proper Roman style!  The Roman Banquet is a multisensorial dining experience in a secret location where you will be transported back in time to the lavish and sophisticated dinners the ancient romans used to throw in their villas….The famous banquets would go on until dawn with guests pigging out and drinking their hearts out. During dinner guests, musicians, acrobats, poets and dancers would perform and dinner conversation played an important role.

The dinner was consumed in a special dining room, which later was to be called triclinium. Here one would lie down on a specially designed couch, the lectus triclinaris. The presence of a lot of food and wine celebrating the abundance in life, carried a message about the end of life and imminent death which was often a theme represented in mosaics and urns...

It was ok... I mean, the food was pretty average. A block of cheddar, and egg and 2 unseasoned chicken drumsticks. The venue was cool, but the entertainment a little odd. Still we got drunk and laughed. It was the first night, so some slack can be cut!

I had a great time at the Gladiator's dinner: the unique venue, the background music, the amazing actors, poets and performers all contributed to recreate a Roman banquet. Enjoyed the Roman menu and wine especially the Mulsum. I'll be definitely attending future events from Barrel & Forks!

I attended this event on 20th January and it was a very enjoyable evening. The menu did differ slightly from what was advertised (check instead of duck) but this was a fairly minor detail. One reviewer complained about the length of time it took to be served, and it's true that it took 3+ hours for get to dessert. I think this is a case of peoples expectations being off and them having plans for later in the evening. We were actually still there at 12:30 enjoying the pudding, but other people need to leave in order to get trains or buses home outside central London. It just needs to be clearly stated that the event lasts for the full session. A couple of items could use improvement: - No area for getting changed. This isn't the organiser's fault, but we brought costumes and needed to change privately somewhere before the meal. Some curtained-off area would have been good for this, instead of changing in the toilet or in the dark. - A menu/programme of events on the table would have been a good idea to remind people what was going on. - There was only one meat course (chicken) but some alternative for a vegetarian could have been provided (all the courses were excellent however). Overall this was an excellent event for a second/third date, and we enjoyed it very much. Visited Secret Location on 2016-02-20

Hello, thank you for responding to our invite to write a review on the Gladiator's Dinner. we love to hear our secret diners feedback so we can always improve! We are happy that you enjoyed the evening overall. As you can imagine, the effort put into the evening was enormous considering the challenge of the space - a crypt where no pop up dinner had been attempted before - in fact this was the first time the crypt had a kitchen set up in the space. We are happy the you enjoyed the venue - recreating a domus romana - and the entertainment by professional actors. A lot of research has been done on the way food was served in ancient roman times, hence the serving by spoonfuls from trays, unlike a traditional contemporary restaurant. Regarding the timing of the event, the programme stated 7 pm - 11 pm ,which is the usual time for such events: this is done on purpose to give enough time to actors to perform and allow the diners to enjoy the performances in between courses, as it used to happen during Roman banquets, which would go on until dawn... - with some habits that we deliberately left out for obvious reasons - We recreated the atmosphere of a roman banquet by involving dancers, actors, poets, and the music was reproduced by speakers so we could have a constant background throughout the evening. Unfortunately we caught a group of diners changing music on the laptop by switching to the top 40 chart song, something that we had little control over straight away. Given the uniqueness of the event, some slight changes may occur sometimes, however the most important thing is that we take our diners back in time, and we hope we managed to do so! Best, Alex

I would like to start by saying that my girlfriend and I did enjoy the emmersive themed night. The venue and enthusiasm of all the staff was unparalleled. But I would like to stick to facts: The menu served was not what was stated. The entertainment did not consist of acrobatics and the music was played through a laptop and speakers with Roman style classical music and the occasional top 40 chart song (translated to Latin) The food was served by spoonfuls and one by one. It took approx 3hours to be served all the dishes. After half of the guests were served the chicken (not duck) the rest were told that they would need to wait another 20-30 minutes for their main meal as there was a problem in the kitchen. This seemed to cause bother to others as a large portion of guests left before the end of the meal. Mainly the problem appeared to be slow service and the change of menu. But again I would like to reiterate that we both enjoyed the night regardless of the problems. Visited Secret Location on 2016-02-20
