Orinta Pranaitytė - Erškėtis
10am at Braithwaite Hall
“...it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to out-carol the lark and the nightingale.”The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough, (2013). In the cultural and sound based performance, ‘Erškėtis’ combines the voices ofthree generations of Lithuanian women in the family (Vilma Pranaitytė, Vida Valenti-na Pranaitienė and Orinta Pranaitytė) together with an endurance strength perfor-mance. The piece concerns immigration; the improvement of a personal situation and one’s conceptions of the ‘other’. As the core of the body balances its weight atheight, it overcomes physical and mental challenges, whilst reflecting on our sacri-fices in life.
River Lin - Bone Setting Service
11:30am at Matthew's Yard: Lounge
Bone-Setting Service isan one-on-one encounter looking at the relationship be-tween physical and emotional pain. How emotional pain and heart-breaking experi-ences connect with one’s own body motivates this performance.A visitor at a time is invited to share a personal story about brokenness and receive a massage tore-set the fractured.
DARC - Transformance
12pm at Matthew's Yard: Gallery
Transformance is a process of artistic exchange and creation in which live performance, documentation, translation and transformation meet. The project seeks to blur the lines between live performance and documentation. The aim is to generate a hybridised live practice by creating and responding together through a variety of disciplines including photography, video, drawing, writing, performance and alternative forms of documentation. At Tempting Failure, the collective will present an installation of the multifaceted documentation created during their Transformance sessions with the participating artists.
Instant Dissidence with Young Roots - Croydon is Dancing
12pm at Croydon Town Centre
Natalie Ramus - Following IN//Footsteps OF
12:30-2:30 at Braithwaite Hall
Following IN//Footsteps OF is an observation of the resistance that is experienced between fragmented parts of the self. Like the body itself, the performative space is autonomous, evolving through time and action. It is an attempt to understand what is a personal experience/way of being, and what is inherited through familial and societal expectation. Through installACTION, ideas of the female and inherited roles of the feminine are confronted. The roles of mother, sister, daughter, artist, etc. are considered alongside notions of feminine function and fertility. Where does my performance of societal labels end and my true embodiment of being a woman, mother, artist begin?
Frauke Requardt and Daniel Oliver -Dadderrs
1pm, 2pm, 3pm at Matthew's Yard: Gallery
An interactive performance for 5 people at a time.
Audience-participants are invited to join Daniel and Frauke in a series of awkwardly intimate and strange actions, rituals, dances, games, and other dysfunctional activities brought back in time from a post-neurodivergent revolution family fun-time future.
Daniel is dyspraxic and is too slow. Frauke has ADHD and is too quick. They are married and have kids. This interactive performance is rooted in their experiences of their bodies as neurodivergent lovers, parents, and weirdo performance makers. It is a space in which clunky experiences of bodies and actions can be discussed, explored and ultimately celebrated through ritualisation and play.
Sarah Davis - Push
2pm at Matthew's Yard
Push an ever-growing work exploring the artist’s experience of receiving chemotherapy and having a stemcell transplant for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The work has been evolving since June 2017. Over an18-hour period artist Sarah Davis will be working in situ documenting and archiving the medical ephemera she has collected over the past year and a half and transforming these objects into plaster artifacts. The work functions as a landscape of trauma, it sits on the floor so the audience views it from above, tracing the narrative suggested by each pill packet. Itis a cathartic work that addresses themes of survival, unfairness and the burden of ill health.
Selina Bonelli - the point of it (guts and glory)
3-6pm at Braithwaite Hall
There are crypts, sarcophagi of mummified memories within our bodies, often located just near the solar plexus.Sizes vary and metamorphosize. Howdoesone release these into being and remember the essence of oneself?
Heather Sincavage - the burden of this
4-8pm at Croydon Town Centre
Trauma is an individual experience yet manifests similarly in our bodies often challenging the sim-plest of tasks. Contending with our trauma is performed in the artwork, the burden of this, by walk-ing while dragging the artist's own body weight in manure. This performance is conducted in public areas as an example of how we always grapple with our trauma, no matter the place or circum-stance. Throughout the performance, the artist fights the abject body as she tries to maneuver the public sphere.
Weeks & Whitford - 'Insult to Injury'
5-9pm at Matthew's Yard: Lounge
In this new performance commissioned by Tempting Failure 2018 Weeks & Whitford will continue their autobiographical approach and ritualize a response to a recent period of illness, mourning, estrangement and survival that has pushed them to their limits. Asserting life and love with its many difficulties, kinks and complications over grief, disability, addiction, and fear this complex durational work reflects an ongoing process of disintegration, renewal and transformation. The work is a rite or a prayer because at points performance is all we have. This work is not suitable for minors.
Aleks Slota - Domestic Communication
6pm at Matthew's Yard: Theatre
Domestic Communication, is an improvised sound performance revealing the hidden ra-diation that surrounds and infiltrates the human bodyin the domestic space. Using EMF detectors an audio image of the invisible forces in the home environment will be created.
