Old ideas about old-world wines having a monopoly on quality have been demolished, and there are some incredibly refined wines being produced in New Zealand and Australia that are brilliant matches for cheeses.
On 15 June join David Hargreaves from Louis Latour as he shares three of his favourite new world wines. We’ll be tasting these brilliant wines alongside a curated cheese pairing from Borough Market showing how to get the most out of the match.
Some varieties like Sauvignon Blanc have found a new home and a new style in the antipodes. Kiwi Sauvignon has become a firm favourite in the UK but we are now beginning to see wines, like those from Smith & Sheth, that combine that bright juicy fruit with a more grown-up restrain and complexity.
The same is true of Australian Chardonnay. A style that burst onto the scene in the 1990s, big Aussie chard was all about ripe tropical fruit. Now, a new wave of producers working in cooler areas of the country are creating wines that have a startling elegance like McHenry Hohnen.
The final wine in the trio is a Pinot Noir from New Zealand. As with Sauvignon Blanc, the Kiwis have made this variety their own, like with Pyramid Valley, putting a richer, fruitier spin on it which makes it a fine match for some of the richer cheeses out there.
The day before Father’s Day in the UK, we cannot think of a better gift for the old man than sharing an afternoon spent tasting wine and cheese.
