After dark with the National Trust

In a letter to the Guardian in 1956, architect Erno Goldfinger wrote that, ‘the whole object of building high is to free the ground for children and grown-ups to enjoy Mother Earth and not to cover every inch with bricks and mortar’. Goldfinger went on to become one of the most celebrated modern architects to work in Britain in the Twentieth Century with the realisation of his concrete dreams. Two of his developments, Balfron Tower in Poplar, East London, and Trellick Tower in Notting Hill are now Grade II star listed.

In this talk, we invite you into the Hampstead living room of Erno and Ursula Goldfinger to hear graphic designer and This Brutal World author, Peter Chadwick discuss the life and work of one of his favourite architects. In a beautifully concrete visual presentation Peter will focus on typography, the construction of Balfron Tower and a little bit of James Bond for good measure.

Peter Chadwick

Peter’s first book ‘This Brutal World’ was published by Phaidon in 2016, his latest book ‘The Town of Tomorrow’ fifty years of Thamesmead was published by Here Press last year.
