Stephanie Theobald is a writer, journalist, novelist and traveller. She is the author of four novels: Biche, Sucking Shrimp, Trix and A Partial Indulgence which was hailed by The Times as delivering, “art, sex, money and class with enormous style.”
Between 2004 and 2009 she was on staff at Harper’s Bazaar UK as a senior editor and reporter on the high society party scene.
She currently writes for publications including The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Elle, Red and The Financial Times. Her work focuses on sexuality, gender and unconventional people.
Sex For One
In 2015, a stone’s throw from my 50th birthday, I attended a masturbation workshop in New York thrown by 87-year-old pot smoking feminist legend, Betty Dodson. Betty’s central message, that masturbation is the foundation of every woman’s sexuality, set me off on a road trip across America in search of my lost sex drive.
During my journey, I tracked down the sex heroines of my youth from Dr Joycelyn Elders, the former US Surgeon General fired by Bill Clinton in 1994 for saying that children should be taught about masturbation to former porn star-turned-erotic performance artist Annie Sprinkle. Sprinkle gave me lessons in “medabation,” an activity she describes as a “gourmet take on solo sex” that comes about when you mix meditation and masturbation.
By the time I returned to the UK, I was fired with inspiration and wrote, Sex Drive, My Orgasmic Road Trip. Sex Drive reveals what happens when a woman takes time out to listen to her body.
During my talk I will read excerpts from Sex Drive, explain why female solo sex is the springboard for the Second Sexual Revolution and reveal what I learned from hanging out with the world’s leading sex experts who don’t just talk the talk but walk the walk. I will conclude with a short film I made of these larger-than-life characters.
