IWT Film Festival : Freedom Calling Short Film Collection

What does it mean to be free — and what are we willing to confront, leave behind or journey through to find it?

Freedom Calling brings together four distinctive films exploring freedom in its many forms. Across histories, cultures and deeply personal experiences, these stories encounter people wrestling with the forces that confine us — and the pull towards something beyond them. From literal escape to battles of identity, memory, belief and the mind, each film asks where freedom lies and what it might cost to answer its call.

Son of Man — Directed by Prince Banini
In a society where men are taught to hide their pain, a young Ghanaian man begins to unravel beneath the weight of grief, trauma and expectations of masculinity. As the boundary between reality and his inner world begins to blur, he must confront the silence he has carried for years. Inspired by the realities of men’s mental health in Ghana, Son of Man is an emotionally charged exploration of vulnerability, identity and the courage it takes to admit that we cannot always carry the weight alone.

Fotosel — Directed by Mücahit Baydaş
Through a striking visual language, Fotosel explores the relationship between the individual and the world around them. Reflective and atmospheric, the film considers perception, constraint and our longing to experience life beyond the boundaries — visible and invisible — that surround us.

Venus of Ossabaw — Directed by Allison Janae Hamilton
In the late 1700s, a young woman escapes enslavement on Georgia’s Ossabaw Island and begins a dangerous journey through the wilderness towards the possibility of freedom in Spanish Florida. But the landscape she must cross can be both adversary and sanctuary, and reaching St Augustine presents its own choices about what freedom will mean. Venus of Ossabaw is a visually arresting story of self-emancipation, survival and the determination to claim ownership of one's own life.

D!SoRd3rEd — Directed by Corey Allen
Experimental, provocative and uncompromising, D!SoRd3rEd confronts identity, history and memory through the experience of a Black “Patient Zero” navigating a fractured reality. As personal and collective histories collide, the film turns its gaze back on a society struggling with the things it would rather not see.

Together, Freedom Calling asks us to consider freedom not simply as a destination, but as a call — to confront what confines us, to question what we have inherited and, ultimately, to imagine what it might mean to live free.
