Daddy Bao is a Taiwanese restaurant in Tooting.

The second restaurant by the man behind Peckham’s Mr Boa, this venue takes its name from his dad, a former restauranteur and inspiration for the brand. The menu is a mixture of classic Mr Bao dishes mixed in with a few exclusives to the site.

As the name suggests, they specialise in bao buns, such as their Mr Bao, made from slow braised Flock & Herd pork, pickles and peanut powder, alongside smaller dishes to share like pork dumplings or sesame spinach. Drinks are classic cocktails with a Taiwanese twist, like the sake martini or Szechuan Old Fashioned, as well as special lychee craft beers from Old Kent Road Brewery. Their brunch is very popular thanks to the tasty Bao benedict and bottomless cocktails.

Ok, I'm the smarmy one. I live in Hong Kong, and passed by, curious what Daddy Bao has to offer. So in we went. The food was both odd and dull. Kimchi minced to a puree was unpleasant, the waiter didn't say anything when we said we didn't like it. The Night Market sausage should be sweet salami style sausage bursting with flavour. This was nothing like anything I've seen in Taiwan, it was a normal porker covered in a sticky soy glaze normally found on the ribs in Chinese takeaways. The fried chicken lacked the spicy sweet combination found in Taipei, and instead was plain and drab. The only redeeming food were the baos, two of which were average, with the beef and the pork belly winners. Honestly, don't bother.

I am SO happy this place has opened! I had an amazing meal here with a couple of friends, and everything was great from start to finish, can't fault it! I would highly recommend the Beef brisket bao and the pork bao. All the food was delicious and the service and atmosphere was excellent, I will definitely be going back ASAP.
