Description

The Good Egg brings Tel Aviv cooking to Soho.

Their second venue after opening in Stoke Newington, the restaurant has set up shop in the Kingly Court complex, These guys are renowned for their brunches, with dishes like bacon and egg pita with date jam, pickled cucumber and mango amba, as well as Shakshuka, which is baked eggs with tomato, peppers and preserved lemon yoghurt. These are washed down with classics like Bloody Mary and Mimosas, but also cocktails like Cardamon coffee – Absolut vodka and a double espresso mixed with housemade cardamom syrup and milk, served over ice.

Their onsite pita oven and smoker means that their evening menu has dishes like pastrami cured salmon and caper schmear, or za’atar fried chicken thighs with chilli honey. There's also a bakery, delivering challah, bagels, babka, and flatbreads. Meanwhile, the cocktail menu fuses American with eastern Mediterranean, along with a strong selection of wines, craft beer and coffees too.

I went with a friend and we had the Jerusalem Breakfast (vegetarian option) plus a flatbread to share which was perfect for a brunch. We followed with a fresh mint tea which the waiter offered to refill. The service was good and friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2018-02-15

The food was good but not outstanding (which is what it needs to be to stand out in the London's crowded middle eastern food market. We ordered mackerel and were served a huge whole fish which was super tasty but it arrived on a tiny saucer which was totally impractical. The waiter just shrugged. Lovely food but terrible service. Badgered for our order the minute we sat down but then took over an hour to get our food (there is no good reason for eggs to take that long!). Had to bolt our food when it finally arrived and then were given the wrong bill when we were in a hurry to leave. Not a great experience overall. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2018-02-11

Very busy and service slow. Portions small - ha fro order three extra breads to use with all the dips. The Jerusalem platter was lovely but tiny, only one disc of aubergine - the best part so would have been nice to have a bit more. Overall a pleasant atmosphere but overpriced and over-hyped. For Brunch: the food is ok but really over priced for what it is. Probably worth it for dinner but not going back anytime soon for breakfast given the wide range choice in London. The decoration is fun tho, reminded me of LA. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2018-02-10

Honestly, the food was excellent - but the service was poor. Our booking was for 2pm; we were not sat until 2:20 and by 2:30 we still didn't even have tap water at the table. What's the point of making a booking if you can't even order food until 30 minutes past your supposed booking time? The staff were nice but seemed to have their heads in the clouds, and the entire restaurant seemed a bit disorganised. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2018-01-27

3 times other people's drinks were brought to us. And no one asked if we wanted more drinks when they brought the food. The food was nowhere near as good as I've heard the Stoke Newington branch is, and the décor lacked soul and charm. Sadly I think I'm going to have to endure the queues in Stokey if I want to try the real Good Egg, rather than this pale imitation. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2018-01-28

It is a shame that a resturant that is part of the sustainable resturant network is selling coca cola products and has them so promptly on show. You should also give more information on your menu about where your meat is from and whether it is free-range. The food was lovely and the staff were great. You were able to adapt it to a dairy free option, but it would be nice to see more vegan options available. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2018-01-07

The Good Egg turned out to actually be the very, very average egg. I was quite excited to try this new Soho branch of the Stoke Newington favorite, particularly given my Montreal roots, however, despite some tasty dishes, I have no urge to return anytime soon. Similar to other reviews I'd noted on the Internet, the service and general restaurant operations were atrocious - Our main waitress seemed incompetent, barely uttering words to us as we sat down and when we requested the bill (we had to follow up to actually get it). Luckily there were a few other servers around who we could flag down and who seemed a little more with it. She did manage to tell us that they were out of approximately one quarter of the menu items, despite it only being 12:00pm and they'd only been open for 3 hours. The wait between ordering your meal and the meal being delivered was extremely long, and lengthened further by the fact that a) my eggs weren't ready with the meal (the "Jerusalem Breakfast" combo) and delivered late, again only after asking about them a second time, and b) the breakfast combo mentioned above can with one measly mini pita, despite essentially being made up of 4 sauces and spreads - not nearly enough pita to accommodate and try all of them, nor did they provide spoons in case you'd assume you slurp them up with one. Most of the sauces and spreads were quite tasty, but we had to order 2 extra mini pitas, and ask for them twice again, and they still had the gumption to charge us for them. My girlfriends Hanukkah Brisket Hash was better, with quite tasty brisket, albeit a bit dry there was a good quantity of it - only issues with that dish was that the egg was overcooked, so there was no runny yolk to help moisten the rest of the dish. The babka is definitely great, and was delivered quickly. Unless The Good Egg Soho gets their act together and more on point, I'd recommend stopping in to grab a babka to go, rather than spending your cash sitting down. The manager was awful at greeting guests at the door, and prioritising guests that had booked, as well as getting customers sat down. No oat milk, no babka - famous babka... The food we ate was fantastic, but it is the only reason we would come back. And to one day pray that the babka hasn't already run out by midday because it has become infamous! The Good Egg was good but not amazing. To be fair I have never been to the Stoke Newington branch, which I hear is better and which I've always wanted to visit. However, The Good Egg Soho still didn't live up to the hyped expectations. I liked the interesting choices the menu had to offer although my vegan friend had a lot of difficulty finding suitable options. I had the Jerusalem breakfast; food was tasty but not "out of this world" and I have had better Israeli-inspired meals at Nopi, The Palomar, Honey & Smoke, The Barbary etc... Service was friendly enough but slow and all the staff seemed to be too busy. Decor-wise, I imagine the Stoke Newington branch has a more homely feel to it. The Soho branch was clean and pretty but lacking very much in character - it just looks like another generic brunch place that "basic girls" like to go to to Instagram their food. Overall I had a good experience but this was nothing special. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-17

The food was excellent, I was particularly impressed with the chocolate babka, it was amazing and tasted like a really soft pain au chocolat! It was just a shame that it took a while for our drinks to arrive but the staff rectified this quickly when they realised it was an issue. It also took a while for tge card machine to come around after we asked for it but this may just be because the staff are getting used to new jobs. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-17

To be honest i felt a little let down by my experience at The Good Egg, after hearing and seeing such great things about the food. I feel it was overpriced and considering we were only there for 40 minutes and spent £100 this was including a karat of wine. I did not think it was value for money. The food is brought out way too quickly and makes you feel like you have to rush to eat it to keep it warm. I get that it is small plates and the food is brought out when it is ready but a little gap in-between the smaller and larger dishes would be better. After paying the bill I remembered that I had a 10% off offer since I did not get a table in the soft launch but was told it was too late to refund since it couldn't be done on the system which I thought was a little frustrating. The food was excellent- I had the shakshuka! However I was disappointed that the lunch specials were not being served and at just 2pm the babka which I had specially come to try was sold out! Our waitress was also remarkably unfriendly. So while the food we did have was great the overall experience was slightly tainted by poor service and the babka not being available! Overall, a hugely disappointing experience. We went to The Good Egg after hearing so much about it, but our visit left us underwhelmed. As soon as we sat down, the waiter came to tell us there were a number of items on the menu that weren't available - one being the one I'd wanted. Not a great start. We then ordered our drinks and food. The food came, but was average tasting at best (Shakshuka was watery and lacked flavour, the sourdough toast accompanying it was so hard, it was difficult to bite). The drinks situation was even worse. I got my pot of tea half an hour into the meal, whilst my friend's flat white came 45 minutes after our food: we'd finished eating and had to ask three times before it arrived (the final time my friend actually got up and went over to explain what a joke it was). We could see the guy making coffees and he wasn't exactly rushed off his feet. At one point, he was too busy wiping the machine down to make the flat white! The staff were all very apologetic and our waiter brought us some cakes on the house to make up for it all; however, these were stale and, as we'd already eaten, not really what we wanted. I found it a bit cheeky that the 12.5% discretionary service charge was still added on to our bill, as well as the flat white. I'd rather these had been removed than been given unwanted, stale pastries. What a pity. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-17

devastated, I loved the Stokey location and this was really below par in terms of food quality. I was so looking forward to it, the shakshuka it was shockingly average, bland. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-11-30

I been twice already this week and will be back again as soon as humanly possible. Everything. Have I eaten (brisket hash, pastrami pita, cornbread French toast, sabih and labneh) has been absolutely unbelievably delicious and so full of the most amazing flavours. This was the second time I'd eaten here in the last month Good points: 1. Food was great. For me the measure of a good restaurant is that even the dishes I don't usually like must taste good - and all the dishes tasted great. We were a group of seven so we more or less ordered everything on the menu and every single dish tasted like it had been prepared by someone who cared about the ingredients, cared about the taste, and wasn't afraid the try some new combinations. That is a winning combination and your cooks deserve proper praises 2 staffs were mostly friends but note below) 3 atmosphere was good - good vibe and good karma (as important as the food) Bad points 1. Waiters were not proactive- we had to chase them to get our drinks, order more food and pay our bill. I expect staff to constantly keep an eye to see signs of change from their tables and this was not happening. At some points we thought we were forgotten 2 I still think sone of the prices are too high for some items (not all) especially for sundries All in all a very enjoyable evening Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-12

Fantastic flavours across the board, couldn't fault a single dish, great vibe. Attentive service but tiny bit understaffed at peak times. Would be really handy to have coat stands/hooks for coats as can get a bit crowded. Would (and will) definitely return. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-12

Delicious food and charming service. Some items were missing from the menu which was a shame, but perhaps it had been a busy weekend, and they'd only been open a week, We enjoyed the ambience and the choice of food and drinks. The babka was superb! Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-10

I must admit after the much anticipated new branch at Kingly Court where reservations can be made, I left feeling whole heartedly disappointed after our brunch. The food was nice - we were big fans of the aubergine dish and the pita bread! However We were disappointed as a lot of the dishes on the menu were not available such as Some of the breads and some of the main dishes - our brunch was 11.30am so it wasn’t even late in the day. And although the restaurant has just opened we were soo disappointed with the service - we had a long wait, some of order was missed off and our table wasn’t cleared at the end. Our bill was also incorrect at the end! We had wanted to Order coffee and try some of the famous babka but no one came to wait on us again when we had finished our main! Such a shame as we had really been looking forward to trying out the good Egg after the wonderful reviews! Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-10

We were a group of 4 who went for brunch on a Saturday morning. The food and service was excellent. The tastes were great and it was nice to have something a little different to the usual brunch offerings. The only thing I could fault was that we had a celiac in our party and there was no substitutes for a few of the breakfasts which she would have liked and no celiac bread with the choice she had to go for. Staff didn't seem to understand the menu. Only two vegan options one of which (the daka salad?) was just tomatoes cucumber and raw onion. My friends non vegan weren't very impressed with any of the food apart from the halloumi. You can tell it's still early days and I was very disappointed in the food and service. Off-putting experience overall. Waited an hour for food. At about 40 minutes in I prompted a member of staff who went to ask. She failed to come back with any update so I had to get up and ask again. I was told we were just waiting for the chicken dish and it would be 1 more minute. No apology accompanied any of this. Still no food turned up. We asked again and finally at least got an apology. A piece of chocolate babka was brought to the table as consolation. Finally 2 of the 3 dishes arrived. 5 minutes later the missing beef shawarma arrived. Then the pitta, after further prompting. And 5 minutes later the potato side. We had to get the babka removed from the bill. We would’ve removed the service charge too had we spotted it. Given the circumstances, why was it even on there?! The food was very tasty, but not worth that wait. FYI the babka was awful - bitter chocolate and over spiced. Try the one in Harrods for reference. In summary, I understand new places can have teething problems, but failing to communicate upfront with customers is an inexcusable fail, especially given the fact that this isn’t the first restaurant you’ve ever ran. I shouldn’t have had to prompt for information and an apology should have been forthcoming before you realised I was annoyed. Staff training would go a long way but usually problems come from the top. It makes me wonder what kind of person owns this place. Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-07

Was amazing food - really delicious and really reasonably priced. One thing was they were quite crowded which was fine - except they put everyones orders on hold for a large table so we did have to wait 20 minutes to order and then another 40 mins for food. When we raised our concerns they did actually bump our order up though so that was good but we did have to eat quickly when it arrived so we could get back. But definitely will come back again - brisket hash eggs and the bagel were amazing Visited The Good Egg Soho on 2017-12-07
