Four Hundred Rabbits - London Restaurant Review

Four Hundred Rabbits specialises in sourdough and cheap Negronis.

Just a few minutes walk from Nunhead station, sits Four Hundred Rabbits. Having opened a year ago, this friendly neighbourhood pizza restaurant was the second of its kind in South London - the first being their Crystal Palace location. Specialising in sourdough bases, it claims to have the cheapest Negroni in London at just £4.

Clearly proud of its South London location, beers from fellow sub-Thames producers the Gypsy Hill Brewery feature prominently on its drinks list, including the Moxie Berry Sour (£4.50), a tart, jammy ale that tastes like fermented Ribena. Also available is the monthly South London Producer Collaboration pizza. The October offering consists of cashel blue cheese, red cabbage, cavolo nero, pumpkin seeds, creme fraiche and the Blenheim Black Hot Sauce from Peckham-based street food kitchen Slow Richie’s (£9.50).

I plumped for a white pizza, with courgette, feta and pine nut pesto (£8.50) - one of their most popular, despite its controversial no-tomato status. The courgette retained a delightful crunch that was offset by the creaminess of the feta and the doughy crusts. Worth a mention also are the dip selections. All sour cream-based (sorry, vegans), there are three house dips that come in Chipotle chilli, confit garlic and cashel blue and chive (£1.50 each), perfect for dipping those chewy crusts into.

When it comes to desserts, Four Hundred Rabbits are gelato fiends, serving up an enticing variety of scoops from Soho gelateria Gelupo. The Eton Mess and banana stracciatella gelato (2 scoops for £4) are sublime - fresh and velvety they make a luxurious accompaniment to the sticky (and gluten free!) salt caramel brownie (£5.50).

Pizza places should be the pinnacle of relaxed, casual dining and Four Hundred Rabbits is just that. It’s a great little spot to grab a pizza and a beer on any occasion. Take your kids, take your parents, take your gluten intolerant mate, all can be catered for at Four Hundred Rabbits. And that £4 Negroni? Yeah, it's a doozy.

Four Hundred Rabbits is located at 143 Evelina Road, Nunhead, London SE15 3HB.
