Camden High Street in the summer.

Camden High Street is officially going car-free.

London's streets are getting some more breathing room. Hot on the heels of Oxford Street's recent pedestrianisation, another busy London high street is going car-free. Camden High Street, known for its buzzing markets, quirky shops, live music venues, and endless choice of bars and restaurants, will remain traffic-free after a successful 18-month trial period.

If you've spent any time in the area, you know there's no shortage of things to do and explore by foot.

Everything You Need To Know About Camden High Street's Pedestrianisation

Which Part of Camden High Street Will Be Pedestrianised?

The traffic-free stretch runs between Britannia Junction, near Camden Town Underground station, and the junction with Jamestown Road and Hawley Crescent.

When Will Camden High Street Pedestrianisation Become Permanent?

Camden Council first introduced the changes in May 2025 as an 18-month trial. Following a public consultation, 57% of respondents backed the plan, making the scheme permanent on the the 27th of October 2026.

The traffic restrictions are already in place, so there's no changes there, but the temporary barriers at either end of the street will be replaced with permanent ones in early 2027.

There's also a bit of a glow-up on the cards, with a deep clean of the high street planned for the coming weeks. The trial has also seen crime, like pickpocketing, decrease, and the Camden Council has pledged £1 million towards additional Community Safety Officer patrols across its town centres.

How Will Buses And Other Traffic Be Affected?

Most motor vehicles will be banned from the pedestrianised stretch, except for emergency service vehicles and bin lorries, which will still have usual access. Northbound cyclists can also continue to use the road.

Meanwhile, a trial bus lane on Kentish Town Road hopes to speed up northbound journeys and help minimise disruption to local bus services.
