Learn how to channel your voice and views through art and writing

We all have something to say, but it can sometimes feel like it’s becoming harder to be heard. Between all the #Girlboss content on Instagram and hot takes on Twitter, how can you get your message across on topics that are important to you — and make other people realise just how important what you’re saying is?

Part of the battle is using words and images in clear, concise, and impactful ways. This has been an important part of activism for centuries: plenty of revolutions and movements across history have used slogans and visuals to rally support and get their message across. Think #Metoo; a raised, closed fist for racial equality and BLM; and the Extinction Rebellion logo.

Join illustrator Hazel Mead and writer Monica Karpinski for a workshop where you’ll learn how to channel and express your own radical voice through art and writing.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • How to create your own personal manifesto as a creator, and how this feeds into the work you create
  • How to create a piece of writing or artwork  that expresses your point of view on an issue important to you. This could be a protest poster, comic strip, drawing — anything! We will provide some templates as guidance but really, you can create whatever you like!
  • Tips and tricks on finding your inner creativity, and how to express that in a visual way
  • Basic writing principles: how to create short and impactful slogans and taglines
  • No prior writing or artistic experience is required for this workshop: we believe that everyone can draw and write, and that everyone has a powerful voice that should be shared.

We will walk you through each step of the creation process with prompts, templates, and examples, so that no matter your skill level, you will be able to leave with something you’ve created.

Art supplies will be provided, and you’ll be able to order food and drink from our wonderful hosts, Kindred, who have a full cafe and restaurant on-site. The space is fully accessible via lift but please let us know about any accessibility needs you have, so that we can make sure that the space is comfortable for you to use.

It was a brilliant night out; Kindred is such a beautiful, intimate space for a comedy show. The staff are warm, the artists were brilliant and the DJ was great. I loved how as host, Travis engaged with the audience in such a friendly way - there is always a worry being sat that close to the stage when comedians are on, but he was funny and engaging with the right amount of banter, keeping us all bubbling for the featured acts, without stealing the show - a great balance. KG stole the show for me - naturally hilarious and confident, with real, relatable stories! Loved Michael’s set too. I came alone and felt right at home. Congrats to everyone who made it happen, it was a fantastic night out! I’ll be back (if I’m in the country). Bless!
