'Abstracted Nature' is part a new series of abstract/expressive painting workshops for all levels of experience; lead by artist and teacher Dan Whiteson & taking place within the beautiful surrounds of Barge East's rooftop bar
Joan Mitchell was an abstract expressionist whose prolific career spanned more than four decades. She worked in a variety of mediums—including oil on canvas, pastel on paper, and lithographic printing—and is widely recognized as one of the most significant artists of the post-war era. Her large-scale works were primarily inspired by remembered landscapes and the natural world, and were made with colourful, lyrical brushstrokes; that whilst seemingly improvised and applied with great energy, were slowly and deliberately built. Further, as a synesthete, she played music and read poetry in her studio, often using sound as a source for radiant and evocative colour too.
In this workshop, we’ll look into the development of her unique visual language and philosophy, before we make our own vibrant and gestural pieces using her inspirations and approaches as a guide. You could use a specific memory of a place/landscape; a piece of music or prose; or choose to take your inspiration from the beautiful garden space/surroundings at Barge East; sketching & photographing in the evening light, before translating & enlarging your preparatory work into your final composition(s).
All necessary drawing/painting materials will be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own paints/surfaces should you prefer. We will be our using phones/tablets for the photographs, so please make sure you have plenty of charge, or bring a charger with you! This is a fully tutored class so no previous experience is required.
Please note the class will be taking place in the beautiful garden/rooftop space at Barge East. There will be a tent overhead, but we will be essentially working & painting outside, so do dress appropriately! We'll be using acrylic paints, which are water based and wash out of clothing, but I would recommend not getting too dressed up, or to bring an apron/change of clothes if you're worried about mess.
Unfortunately the rooftop bar is up a set of stairs, with no alternative access. Please message me directly if you have any concerns.

FreeForm Life Drawing began life over a decade ago in 2011, when professional artist Dan Whiteson decided to start up a new style of life drawing class. Drawing from both his experience as a practising figurative artist and of creative education in general, he wanted to build an approach to teaching that created a sense of fearlessness and play in his students. Now collaborating with other artists and creatives to facilitate a wide range of creative workshops, FreeForm Life Drawing seeks to give everyone that attends the opportunity to engage with their own creativity in a safe, engaging & joyful way.

2. Tickets are issued subject to the rules and regulations of the venue.
3. Please check your tickets, as mistakes cannot always be rectified.
4. Occasionally, events are cancelled or postponed by the promoter, team, performer or venue for a variety of reasons. If the event is cancelled, please contact us for information on receiving a refund from the responsible party. If the event was moved or rescheduled, the venue or promoter may set refund limitations. It is your responsibility to ascertain the date and time of any rearranged event.
5. The venue reserves the right to refuse admission and may on occasion have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of the patrons.
6. Every effort to admit latecomers will be made at a suitable break in the event, but admission cannot always be guaranteed.
7. We regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded after purchase.
8. Tickets are sold subject to the venue or promoter's right to alter or vary the programme due to events or circumstances beyond its control without being obliged to refund monies or exchange tickets.
