Between 1309 and 1814, at least 23 Frost Fairs were held over a frozen River Thames. Stalls were set up from a variety of vendors including roast ox, gingerbread & hot gin. Temperatures reached so low that women would be seen carrying baskets of hot apples wrapped in cloth around their heads to keep warm. These times were known as the 'Little Ice Age'.
