The Fellow - London Pub Review

The Fellow - London Pub Review

Pushy pubs may often seem to make up the bones of the London hospitality industry, but there's sweet digs in King's Cross that have no time for that tanked up temper. Humble, heaving with charming hosts and great for a date, The Fellow gets snaps...

overall quite pleasant, the private room was lovely, but the desserts were really rather poor. The custard with the very small crumble was like milk, and the Christmas Pud wasn't much loved at all. There were 12 of us, and unfortunately any negative comments came at the end of the meal. Unfortunately by becoming a part of the Geronimo group, standards of creativity have very much slipped at The Fellow, it is not the gastro pub it used to be, it's just a regular pub now. What a lovely little pub in the middle of a pretty hectic little area. The staff were fantastic and the chef kindly made my celiac/vegetarian friend a wonderful meal of her own without any complaints or hassle. It was warm and very inviting, really felt like a place you could sit for hours eating, drinking and chatting. Visited The Fellow on 2017-12-10

Our team of 50 really enjoyed our private event in the Black Door Cocktail Bar and Terrace at The Fellow for our Christmas Party. Laura was more than happy to delay the food by half an hour when some people were delayed. Similarly Andrea was really accommodating when we realized the red wine we pre ordered wasn't been drunk half as much at the wine and beers, therefore arranged to swap it out and even refunded us the difference in cash, although it was only £3.00! Lastly Gio was very patient on the bar considering a lot of the drink had been pre ordered, but kept clearing glasses and plates and was ready to serve the shots when those orders came in at the end of the night. All in all it was a successful night - thank you for your help Zoe for arranging the booking with me. Kimberley Visited The Fellow on 2017-12-05

good atmosphere but not really targeted at lunch crowd. prices are for people with corporate cards, not regular workers spending their own money. it was either sandwiches at £8 or mains at £14+. the sandwich was minimal for the price. would be nice to have more options like salads, soups. only one server to cover the entire dining space. All the men's and half the unisex toilets were out of order - meaning there was only one toilet for all the men in the pub, and no space to queue. Food was mediocre, and overpriced - which was disappointing as I have had better food here in the past. Beer was good - even if there was slightly too much foam on each pint - and service was too pushy. All in all, I'll look for somewhere else next time I'm having a friendly drink near Kings Cross. The staff who looked after us was fantastic and deaf aware. Well done. The only downside was that when we ordered the burger, we found out that they'd run out of bacon, eggs and I believe onions! How can a restaurant run out of food supplies? Visited The Fellow on 2017-10-25

I booked my table weeks in advance for family arriving from Yorkshire in the evening. When we arrived we had to wait while around ten people removed their luggage and coats who had dumped them at our table before we could sit down. When we finally sat down we were to told my teenage daughter and nieces could not dine after 17.00 and refused to serve us food. There was no mention that teenagers could not use the premises after 17.00 when I booked. Neither did the booking ask if there were any children in my party. I was left to find a table for 7 around Kings Cross on a Friday evening. Mission Impossible. Won't be going to the Fellow again. Thanks for ruining our night. Visited The Fellow on 2017-09-15

Have visited the Fellow for a meal several times over the past few years but was disappointed this time. It seems to have repositioned itself now as a premium beer establishment and downgraded the food element to some very ordinary fare, with much restricted choice (not even a steak on the menu) but without the downside adjustment in price. Real ale at £5.90 a pint is also over the top, even for central London. The only real redeeming feature was the service, which was excellent. It is now a drinkers pub and not somewhere to go for a meal, unless you want bar food. Visited The Fellow on 2017-09-14

Paid £18 for the 3 single gin & tonics, the worst ever served. We couldn't taste the gin. The Hendricks one came filled with cucumber, to the point that we joked that it looked like a soup. The bartender was incredibly rude and slow, just annoyed with the fact that he had to work really. Never to come back.

The waitress service was very welcome, but the food didn't live up to expectations. My sausages were cooked ok (I'd asked for them to be cooked very well done) but two friends had cheeseburgers and the inside of the burgers were raw. One friend sent his back and they provided a fresh one that was cooked thoroughly through, the other friend chanced it:-) http://www.bha.org.uk/bha_news/q-a-on-medium-and-rare-burgers/ Visited The Fellow on 2017-09-01

We hired the private terrace and black door private room for our summer party. All in all it was a cracking event. The staff throughout the evening were super friendly and kept me up to date on the food and drinks coming out. They also handled a rowdy group very well come the end of the night!! Super space for the cost aswell - beautiful room (we got a jazz band and silent disco) and private outdoor space in the centre of London. The burger sliders and onion rings were very tasty. The only reason it didn't get a 5 was because wifi wasnt working (but wasnt informed before) and some of the pre-ordered drinks weren't available (we chose others). Visited The Fellow on 2017-07-29

Had a lovely meal here on Saturday with my daughter. Both our burgers were 'sizeable', with generous portions of skinny fries. We also shared a side of Onion Rings, were insanely good. Crispy not soggy! We both went for the Bannoffee Pie, which was light & creamy, served with malted Banana Ice Cream, so banana-y, it tasted not unlike those foam banana sweets you used to have a kid. Stunning! We also enjoyed a drink on the "secret terrace" before our meal. Unfortunately, food service doesn't go up to the roof, which I'm guessing has something to do with our feathered friends? Lastly, worth mentioning the extensive Ale selection. The Camden Hells & Pale both went down a treat in the sunshine. They also had 3 guest Ales on, including one from my local brewery back in Brum, Purity! At time of writing, I am planning on going back next week, to meet some pals from down South & to celebrate my 50th. The plan is to stay here all day...it really is that good! I asked for a medium rare steak but got a well done sirlion steak. For dessert I was given a cold uneatable sticky toffee pudding lacking any toffee. Really nice pub but the quinoa salad (starter) was pretty rubbish. It was made up of way too much bland quinoa with no flavour. It needed something adding to it to make it actually taste of anything. Despite being apologetic, the waiters/waitresses were hopeless. We had to keep going up to them to let them know we were ready to order (twice), they didn't get the drink order right, we had to go up again to let them know we wanted to order dessert. To add insult to injury, most of the items we wanted weren't available, we were told the kitchen couldn't handle dessert requests for a 'while' and could we wait, and decaf coffee wasn't an option. Hopeless. Visited The Fellow on 2017-06-05

I remember the food being much better when I visited in the past and I'm afraid I won't be back. My quinoa starter was dull and much too large. My main chicken and chorizo stew was tasteless. Lovely venue, friendly staff .. The .only negative point - I thought the buffet food was too expensive for what it was and the sandwiches would have been more manageable for guests to eat if cut in quarters.. We still had a great night, Thank you Visited The Fellow on 2017-05-15

Thanks so much to Jon and The Fellow Staff for all the arrangements and hosting our group. Everyone was very happy with how it was all set up and I got got rave reviews for the food, which is awesome for a group of 25! We went with the boards, but a few people also stayed to have dinner after the event itself. Will definitely book again. Visited The Fellow on 2017-05-10

Good, attentive staff, but a terrible french onion soup - it was basically just a bowl of onion with a couple of slices of french toast on top, spread with some kind of inedible paste. My colleague had a roast, which looked nice and was enormous. This is a nice pub for drinking in, but on the basis of last night I wouldn't eat there again. Visited The Fellow on 2017-05-07

I have been once before and the food was nice first time round. 2nd time round (28th April, Lunchtime), food was really terrible. One of us had 'smashed avocados on toast with eggs'. What came was off colour avocado on one very small piece of toast with one, cold, poached egg on top. The previous time i visited, my friend had ordered the same dish and it had come as two large pieces of toast, bright , fresh avo, albeit one egg (when it says eggs plural on the menu) , but it looked far better than what was served second time round. Very disappointing. The other dish was the prawn and avo sandwich in a bisque dressing. Horrible. Everything drenched in sickly sweet dressing, chewy prawns, limp lettuce and dull, mashed avocado with chilli or some colouring/spiced mixed into it on the bottom. The wine and service very nice, but unfortunately, due to food, we wont be back. Visited The Fellow on 2017-04-28

I'm sorry but my experience last night was awful. Despite having booked for 14 for a birthday dinner (and paid deposit), we weren't 'served' and instead had to order food individually, leaving everyone eating at different times. Then the kitchen backlogged and half our group didn't get to eat at all, including the birthday girl! We were given a bottle of prosecco but no one was particularly apologetic. The food that did come out was terrible, including a raw burger. Visited The Fellow on 2017-04-24

Took a long time for anyone to acknowledge us, we had a booking but just walked in and sat down. Friendly service. Lacking atmosphere. I pass every day (I live locally) and was under the impression that you are more of a gastro-pub, it's clear now that your a chain pub that does a bit of food...That said the roast lunch we had was of a good standard. Probably wouldn't visit again but that's down to me not being a pub kinda guy. It's worth bearing in mind that the dining tables in the centre where we were sat are pretty exposed, not ideal to sit and have a meal...but your a pub that does food so probably exactly your model. Shh! I'm keeping this place a secret so it doesn't get horribly crowded when people discover the warm atmosphere and great food. I was disappointed with the food. While the quality was good, for the price the amount of food served was very poor. Food and service was great. The only issue was that I was celebrating my birthday assuming the pub will be open until 11pm on a Sunday, and then the waitress told us that it closes at 10pm, and then, around 9pm she approached us to say that they actually decided to close at 9:30pm, although there were about 20 people still at the pub and felt like we were forced to leave too early. As I booked the table from 7, I wish I was told that the pub will be close early, as i might change the location. Visited The Fellow on 2017-03-19

The pub was great and we had a fun night. The only small glitch was I thought I'd reserved a space for 12-14 people to have drinks and food. When I arrived a sofa and two armchairs had been reserved for us that seated seven people at most. We dragged more chairs around the coffee table as they became available - but nobody ate food as there was no space, which was a slight shame. Visited The Fellow on 2017-03-10

We have been coming to The Fellow for several years. We had lunch at the 'new' Fellow on Thursday and our impression wasn't exactly great. There was photographer taking pictures of people without any authorisation, and the 'owners' / 'managers' were occupying what was arguably the most comfortable table in the room on their laptops. The food was average but overpriced and the new interior isn't as nice as what it was before the renovations started. The service was sluggish and the portion size of the Mac & Cheese was laughably small, considering the price. I'm not quite sure what the objective was here, as the 'previous' fellow had a great menu and looked great. Visited The Fellow on 2017-03-09

It was really quite nice. Although- it wasn't clear which tables were mine. I'd said a booking for 25-30 people, and at first there was only a sign on 2 out of 3 tables in the corner. I had to ask the manager twice to sort this out, as someone was sitting in the middle table- which broke up our party. He did eventually, and it was fine, if a little stressful at first. otherwise, all good! Visited The Fellow on 2017-01-31

We had to wait about 10 minutes for our table to be ready. Then when we got the menus, around 4 things weren't available any more - at 6pm on a Saturday night. We wanted the ox cheeks off the Hygge menu to then be told they were sold out as well. The waitress said the replacement was a stuffed chicken breast, she didn't know with what but vaguely said black pudding. So we went for that. We asked for 'same again' drinks, they brought out half pints instead of pints. Then the food arrived, it was nothing like a stuffed chicken breast -more a chopped up chicken casserole. And our greens were forgotten about. When I mentioned this I had to dig around in my main course to prove they really weren't there before some were ordered from the kitchen, which then turned up at the end of the meal. The food was very tasty and the waitress did give us our drinks for free, but overall it was quite a shambles and I wouldn't go back. Visited The Fellow on 2017-01-28

The private room was very nice however we were very much let down by the service. I had to go down to ask someone to come and take our food order after about 20 mins. Our food also took far too long to come and when it did it was to a very average standard. One of my friends dishes had some burnt items and some side dishes only came when we almost finished our meals. I used to work at the Fellow as and part of the opening team. The. Staff that did serve us were friendly. The standard of service I can truly say has dropped. In the end as you could appreciate I had to ask for the service charge to be removed from the bill Even the bill was wrong when it came to paying and splitting the bill amongst us. We still Managed to enjoy the night despite the poor service. Visited The Fellow on 2017-01-20

I think the food generally was ok. Considering it was Christmas Day I felt maybe the staff could have been a bit friendlier. We did not receive our prosecco on arrival as the menu stated and had to ask for it with our desert. We did not receive the 'Jude's Sorbet' either as promised on the menu. The child's portion was the same as the adults portion but £15 cheaper ?? I requested on the pre-order forms I was sent that I would like mince pies and coffee which was part of the meal price but wasn't even offered this at the end of the meal I felt like I should be leaving after dessert. Very disappointing. We booked for our annual christmas meal and arrived (at the beginning of lunchtime) to be told that only burgers or steaks were available as there were a lot of bookings. As we are vegetarians or non beef eaters we had to find another venue. The Fellow has always been a great venue in the past, this was really surprising. Visited The Fellow on 2016-12-09

Hi there, Thank you so much for your feedback I am sorry that this has happened to you, as you know this is not something that usually happens but during the busy-ness of Christmas the menu can change We do hope that we see you again in the future being back to the Fellow that you know and love. Thanks, Kat

NOT GOOD. Turned up, table booked but was then told, without a sorry or serious apology that they could seat us but could only serve food off the Christmas menu and no vegetarian or fish options. Why didn't they call me beforehand, I gave my number on the website. Staff eventually offered to try and call their sister pub at King's Cross station which they did and offered us a table there but on the way I changed my mind and just thought don't want to give my business to this company. Will cancelled the table my company have booked there for Christmas next week, hopefully my colleague will remember to call and cancel. Visited The Fellow on 2016-12-09

I booked a table for dinner at 6pm. When we arrived a table was reserved for us but it was covered in spilt drinks and the venue was so noisy it was like being in a club. There were no menus on the table or waiting staff. A very different experience to going for lunch. We bought one drink at the bar but then left as it was far too chaotic for dinner. I was clear I was booking a table for dinner so I think you should warn people what it's like in the evening. Visited The Fellow on 2016-12-08

Hi there, Thank you so much for your feedback it is good to know our areas for improvement. I am so sorry that the table wasn't cleared for your arrival, Thursdays can become quite busy although this isn't an excuse. We do like to have different atmospheres in the lunch and dinner due to the different crowds we get particularly on Thursday and Friday nights where we do like to turn up the volume to the music to get people in the mood for the weekend. However, I will let the team know to keep track on the volume levels to make sure they don't go too high in the future. If you would like to further your comments so please do email me: thefellowevents@geronimo-inns.co.uk I do hope we see you again. Thanks, Kat

Great service and ambience though several guests unfortunately found the food to be overpriced. Everyone had a great time though! Visited The Fellow on 2016-11-26

after the initial disappointment of not having the area we booked and not being told till two days before our event (even though we had booked a month in advance) myself and my team had a fantastic time here. Food was good and we were well looked after by the staff. I would defiantly go back here again. well done to the staff. Visited The Fellow on 2016-12-01
