The Fellow - London Pub Review

Pushy pubs may often seem to make up the bones of the London hospitality industry, but there's sweet digs in King's Cross that have no time for that tanked up temper. Humble, heaving with charming hosts and great for a date, The Fellow gets snaps...

Lovely staff and decent food but service way too slow for Sunday a not too busy Sunday lunch. Starter of smoked salmon not great value at £9.25 for a couple of meagre slices of smoked salmon and a very thin slice of bread. I love the Fellow but something not right in the kitchen! visited The Fellow on 25 Jun 2017

I asked for a medium rare steak but got a well done sirlion steak. For dessert I was given a cold uneatable sticky toffee pudding lacking any toffee. Management agreed to reheat the pudding but it was still cold. This ranks as one of my worst dining experiences and would advise diners to avoid this third rate establishment visited The Fellow on 24 Jun 2017

Really pleased with how my party went - everybody loved the venue - and full marks for the service provided. The event was unobtrusively well staffed. Organization throughout (from the moment I made the reservation) was low key but efficient. Drinks & food were high quality and the final bill was almost exactly as expected. visited The Fellow on 17 Jun 2017

Really nice pub but the quinoa salad (starter) was pretty rubbish. It was made up of way too much bland quinoa with no flavour. It needed something adding to it to make it actually taste of anything. There are a million website with quinoa salad ideas, definitely could do better! visited The Fellow on 05 Jun 2017

Despite being apologetic, the waiters/waitresses were hopeless. We had to keep going up to them to let them know we were ready to order (twice), they didn't get the drink order right, we had to go up again to let them know we wanted to order dessert. To add insult to injury, most of the items we wanted weren't available, we were told the kitchen couldn't handle dessert requests for a 'while' and could we wait, and decaf coffee wasn't an option. Hopeless. visited The Fellow on 05 Jun 2017

I remember the food being much better when I visited in the past and I'm afraid I won't be back. My quinoa starter was dull and much too large. My main chicken and chorizo stew was tasteless. My friends were similarly underwhelmed. The prices however were top dollar for a pub and simply not worth it. The waitress however was great. visited The Fellow on 26 May 2017

Lovely venue, friendly staff .. The .only negative point - I thought the buffet food was too expensive for what it was and the sandwiches would have been more manageable for guests to eat if cut in quarters.. We still had a great night, Thank you visited The Fellow on 15 May 2017

Thanks so much to Jon and The Fellow Staff for all the arrangements and hosting our group. Everyone was very happy with how it was all set up and I got got rave reviews for the food, which is awesome for a group of 25! We went with the boards, but a few people also stayed to have dinner after the event itself. Will definitely book again. visited The Fellow on 10 May 2017

Good, attentive staff, but a terrible french onion soup - it was basically just a bowl of onion with a couple of slices of french toast on top, spread with some kind of inedible paste. My colleague had a roast, which looked nice and was enormous. This is a nice pub for drinking in, but on the basis of last night I wouldn't eat there again. visited The Fellow on 07 May 2017

I have been once before and the food was nice first time round. 2nd time round (28th April, Lunchtime), food was really terrible. One of us had 'smashed avocados on toast with eggs'. What came was off colour avocado on one very small piece of toast with one, cold, poached egg on top. The previous time i visited, my friend had ordered the same dish and it had come as two large pieces of toast, bright , fresh avo, albeit one egg (when it says eggs plural on the menu) , but it looked far better than what was served second time round. Very disappointing. The other dish was the prawn and avo sandwich in a bisque dressing. Horrible. Everything drenched in sickly sweet dressing, chewy prawns, limp lettuce and dull, mashed avocado with chilli or some colouring/spiced mixed into it on the bottom. The wine and service very nice, but unfortunately, due to food, we wont be back. visited The Fellow on 28 Apr 2017

I'm sorry but my experience last night was awful. Despite having booked for 14 for a birthday dinner (and paid deposit), we weren't 'served' and instead had to order food individually, leaving everyone eating at different times. Then the kitchen backlogged and half our group didn't get to eat at all, including the birthday girl! We were given a bottle of prosecco but no one was particularly apologetic. The food that did come out was terrible, including a raw burger. visited The Fellow on 24 Apr 2017

Took a long time for anyone to acknowledge us, we had a booking but just walked in and sat down. Friendly service. Lacking atmosphere. I pass every day (I live locally) and was under the impression that you are more of a gastro-pub, it's clear now that your a chain pub that does a bit of food...That said the roast lunch we had was of a good standard. Probably wouldn't visit again but that's down to me not being a pub kinda guy. It's worth bearing in mind that the dining tables in the centre where we were sat are pretty exposed, not ideal to sit and have a meal...but your a pub that does food so probably exactly your model. visited The Fellow on 16 Apr 2017

Food and service was great. The only issue was that I was celebrating my birthday assuming the pub will be open until 11pm on a Sunday, and then the waitress told us that it closes at 10pm, and then, around 9pm she approached us to say that they actually decided to close at 9:30pm, although there were about 20 people still at the pub and felt like we were forced to leave too early. As I booked the table from 7, I wish I was told that the pub will be close early, as i might change the location. visited The Fellow on 19 Mar 2017

The pub was great and we had a fun night. The only small glitch was I thought I'd reserved a space for 12-14 people to have drinks and food. When I arrived a sofa and two armchairs had been reserved for us that seated seven people at most. We dragged more chairs around the coffee table as they became available - but nobody ate food as there was no space, which was a slight shame. visited The Fellow on 10 Mar 2017

We have been coming to The Fellow for several years. We had lunch at the 'new' Fellow on Thursday and our impression wasn't exactly great. There was photographer taking pictures of people without any authorisation, and the 'owners' / 'managers' were occupying what was arguably the most comfortable table in the room on their laptops. The food was average but overpriced and the new interior isn't as nice as what it was before the renovations started. The service was sluggish and the portion size of the Mac & Cheese was laughably small, considering the price. I'm not quite sure what the objective was here, as the 'previous' fellow had a great menu and looked great. visited The Fellow on 09 Mar 2017

It was really quite nice. Although- it wasn't clear which tables were mine. I'd said a booking for 25-30 people, and at first there was only a sign on 2 out of 3 tables in the corner. I had to ask the manager twice to sort this out, as someone was sitting in the middle table- which broke up our party. He did eventually, and it was fine, if a little stressful at first. otherwise, all good! visited The Fellow on 31 Jan 2017

We had to wait about 10 minutes for our table to be ready. Then when we got the menus, around 4 things weren't available any more - at 6pm on a Saturday night. We wanted the ox cheeks off the Hygge menu to then be told they were sold out as well. The waitress said the replacement was a stuffed chicken breast, she didn't know with what but vaguely said black pudding. So we went for that. We asked for 'same again' drinks, they brought out half pints instead of pints. Then the food arrived, it was nothing like a stuffed chicken breast -more a chopped up chicken casserole. And our greens were forgotten about. When I mentioned this I had to dig around in my main course to prove they really weren't there before some were ordered from the kitchen, which then turned up at the end of the meal. The food was very tasty and the waitress did give us our drinks for free, but overall it was quite a shambles and I wouldn't go back. visited The Fellow on 28 Jan 2017

The private room was very nice however we were very much let down by the service. I had to go down to ask someone to come and take our food order after about 20 mins. Our food also took far too long to come and when it did it was to a very average standard. One of my friends dishes had some burnt items and some side dishes only came when we almost finished our meals. I used to work at the Fellow as and part of the opening team. The. Staff that did serve us were friendly. The standard of service I can truly say has dropped. In the end as you could appreciate I had to ask for the service charge to be removed from the bill Even the bill was wrong when it came to paying and splitting the bill amongst us. We still Managed to enjoy the night despite the poor service. visited The Fellow on 20 Jan 2017

I think the food generally was ok. Considering it was Christmas Day I felt maybe the staff could have been a bit friendlier. We did not receive our prosecco on arrival as the menu stated and had to ask for it with our desert. We did not receive the 'Jude's Sorbet' either as promised on the menu. The child's portion was the same as the adults portion but £15 cheaper ?? I requested on the pre-order forms I was sent that I would like mince pies and coffee which was part of the meal price but wasn't even offered this at the end of the meal I felt like I should be leaving after dessert. visited The Fellow on 25 Dec 2016

We were a party of 8 meeting for Christmas drinks and dinner. The beer was good. There were 3 real ales on tap as well as lagers. We chose the Bordeaux Superieur with dinner which went down very well. Apparently the Rioja wasn't too bad either! Service was good as well as friendly. Very convenient as just round the corner from Kings Cross Station. visited The Fellow on 20 Dec 2016

Venue and staff were great but food service went wrong-our mains were sent out an hour after the starters and desserts, an hour after the mains. I had to go and remind them several times and I was told there were 150 covers and 2 cooks-it's a pub not a restaurant! We booked well in advance and paid a deposit. Disappointed so only 4stars! Very disappointing. We booked for our annual christmas meal and arrived (at the beginning of lunchtime) to be told that only burgers or steaks were available as there were a lot of bookings. As we are vegetarians or non beef eaters we had to find another venue. The Fellow has always been a great venue in the past, this was really surprising. visited The Fellow on 09 Dec 2016

NOT GOOD. Turned up, table booked but was then told, without a sorry or serious apology that they could seat us but could only serve food off the Christmas menu and no vegetarian or fish options. Why didn't they call me beforehand, I gave my number on the website. Staff eventually offered to try and call their sister pub at King's Cross station which they did and offered us a table there but on the way I changed my mind and just thought don't want to give my business to this company. Will cancelled the table my company have booked there for Christmas next week, hopefully my colleague will remember to call and cancel. visited The Fellow on 09 Dec 2016

I booked a table for dinner at 6pm. When we arrived a table was reserved for us but it was covered in spilt drinks and the venue was so noisy it was like being in a club. There were no menus on the table or waiting staff. A very different experience to going for lunch. We bought one drink at the bar but then left as it was far too chaotic for dinner. I was clear I was booking a table for dinner so I think you should warn people what it's like in the evening. visited The Fellow on 08 Dec 2016

Hi there, Thank you so much for your feedback it is good to know our areas for improvement. I am so sorry that the table wasn't cleared for your arrival, Thursdays can become quite busy although this isn't an excuse. We do like to have different atmospheres in the lunch and dinner due to the different crowds we get particularly on Thursday and Friday nights where we do like to turn up the volume to the music to get people in the mood for the weekend. However, I will let the team know to keep track on the volume levels to make sure they don't go too high in the future. Lovely pub, great friendly service. The food however, was a bit average. Soup was very thin, burgers were not very exciting. There were only 2 dessert options, one of which was ice cream. Lovely event, although I had come to visit from another Young's pub and had brought my staff discount along, it was a bit frustrating that there was no-one on the bar that could give the staff discount, and refused to go fetch the supervisor to do it, so four times out of five I couldn't get the discount: which was part of my reason for coming. Also, after hiring the table, the staff took the "reserved" sign away so we had to keep asking people not to share our table as it took an hour or so for everyone to arrive. Apart from that the pub was lovely and the staff were friendly. visited The Fellow on 19 Nov 2016

I have been to The Fellow a number of times over the years, but I hadn't been in a while and I have to say the quality of the food as deteriorated. It was still nice and we had a nice evening - atmosphere is good and it's a friendly place, but I was quite disappointed with the chicken burger. I always thought of it as a gastropub, but this was more like normal pub-grub. visited The Fellow on 17 Nov 2016

Still not a bad pub, but the quality of the food as detoriated since I first started using it. The menu choice has gone down, and the braised ox cheeks were far too tough to be enjoyable. My glass of malbec also didn't taste brilliant. However, it still feels more clean than many pubs, particularly the loos, and we didn't have to wait too long for food or queue for hours at the bar. The staff kept opening the door directly behind me though, leading to me feeling pretty chilly, particularly given it's the end of October! I hope the pub can bring itself back up to the level it used to be! visited The Fellow on 20 Oct 2016

I have to be honest, it was one of the worst meals i've eaten in a long time and really quite expensive given the poor quality. the squid was chewy to the point of inedible, the prawn salad was basically a prawn cocktail, the steak was undercooked, the chips were cold and the 'sauce' that came with it was a big blob of butter. also the presentation from awful - a lot of iceberg lettuce thrown unlovingly on the plate. my friend's ox cheek was so tough he couldn't even cut it up. I'm sorry to be so negative but for £100 this was pretty appalling. visited The Fellow on 19 Oct 2016
