Are you a theatre, dance or performance artist, director, designer, dramaturg, stage manager, technician, or anything in between and want to push your boundaries and look at performance from a fresh angle?

Join director, dramaturg and performance maker, Ria Samartzi for an intensive workshop inspired by the Six Viewpoints theory and practice.

Over the course of a weekend, you’ll experiment with different materials and techniques, building on skills and awareness and exploring alternative ways of making and thinking about performance.

About the workshop

Over two days we will spend time practising within the deconstructed framework/s of space, shape, time, emotion, movement and story and examine their expanded possibilities. Participants will be given space to reflect on their practice and invited to consider what it is they may take for granted in the making of performance. We will introduce working within horizontal hierarchies and employ them as a departure point for creation.

Originated by choreographer Mary Overlie, the Six Viewpoints is a study that establishes and expands the base of performance by inquiring into the vocabulary of the basic materials that are found in the creation of art. Resulting from Mary’s decades long investigation into the materials and search for a common language of performance, this work and its many re-iterations has formed the basis of theatre and dance training around the world as it complements and expands on more traditional forms, simultaneously nurturing artistic agency and a collaborative mind.

Who is it for?

This workshop is for theatre, dance and performance artists of all disciplines, including directors, designers, dramaturgs, stage managers and technicians and anything in between. Other artists also welcome.

No prior Viewpoints or movement experience is necessary.

Please wear comfortable clothes and footwear you can move in.
