Reimagining economics is an exploration of the economy. We’ll explore some ideas and then literally go exploring round London Bridge. The talk will include a short walk around the London Bridge area – looking at how the economy has shaped the buildings and the stories of people’s lives in the real world.
The aim of the session is to
• Give people an understanding of how the economy works and ask the questions about economics that aren’t generally covered in the media.
• Explain some key economic concepts like trade, debt and employment. We’ll take a look at current narratives around these topics and imagine how they could work differently in the future.
• Bring some understanding of the past and how this country got rich (spoilers – Imperialism) into our understanding of the present.
• Take economics out of the abstract place it’s been kicked by people who’d prefer you don’t think about all this. The point of going on a walk is to see how economics has shaped the places you pass everyday.
Led by economics lecturer, award nominated comedian and co-creator of the Brixton Pound, Susie Steed, will help you get to grips with how our seemingly confusing economic system works. She will focus on walking you through key features of our economic system, how we got to where we are today, and where we can go next.
