Summer Streets: Shoreditch Goes Car-Free This Summer
What Is The Summer Streets Programme?
The Summer Streets scheme is an initiative put forward by the Mayor of London, which will see some of the capital's most popular areas go car-free throughout the summer months. Currently, the chosen areas spread across South, East and Central and has £300,000 worth of funding under its belt.
Earlier this year, plans were put forward to pedestrianise Soho in a bid to take the Central London streets back to their alfresco dining era that was initiated after the pandemic. Now, multiple areas have been allocated funding to encourage outdoor drinking and dining across the capital.
Where In Shoreditch Has Been Pedestrianised?
Shoreditch council has been granted £100,000 so that restaurants and bars on Redchurch Street and Rivington Street can offer alfresco drinking and dining options. Although this is a summer initiative, these streets will only go car-free on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer.
Where Else Is Set To Go Car-Free In London This Summer?
Three other locations in the capital are planning to go car-free this summer. These include:
- West End - Westminster Council has received £100,000 to pedestrianise St Martin's Lane between 11am and 11pm every day, with around 34 businesses eligible for alfresco licenses.
- Brixton - Businesses on Atlantic Road and Brixton Road Station will have access to 400 square metres of additional outdoor space (costing £50,000 in funding), however these areas will only be car-free on specified weekends until 10pm.
- Leyton - Francis Road is set to extend its car-free hours and more seating will be arranged at Leyton Midland Road, this project has also received £50,000 worth of funding.
