A new park will transform an unused stretch of Chelsea's riverside.
From hidden gardens to a 14-mile 'nature corridor' built to boost biodiversity, London takes its green spaces pretty seriously. But in a city as industrial and populated as the Big Smoke, sometimes we have to get a bit creative to bring the people more serene places to relax - old power stations become community hubs, former coal distribution centres become a place to gather, and now, a former industrial riverside site in Chelsea is being transformed into a brand-new public park.
Plans have officially been approved for a new green space at Chelsea Riverside, turning what is currently a mostly unused stretch beside the Thames into a beautifully landscaped public area filled with greenery and plenty of spaces to sit and enjoy the riverside views.
Plans For A New Park At Chelsea's Riverside Have Been Approved
Where Is The New Chelsea Riverside Park?
The future park will be built at Cremorne Wharf Depot Foreshore, next to the River Thames in Chelsea. Interestingly, the site sits above part of the Thames Tideway Tunnel project, better known as London’s “super sewer” - a huge project designed to reduce sewage pollution in the Thames. As you can imagine, the current site isn't the prettiest, making this transformation one we're really excited to see finished.
What Will The New Park Include?
The riverside park will be about one acre and split into different zones for relaxing, socialising, and activity. Plans for the new park include:
- New trees and planting
- Seating areas
- Public artwork
- Play spaces
- Improved riverside access
- A new pedestrian route linking directly to the Thames Path
When Will The Park Open?
There’s no official opening date yet, but after the project is officially moving forward after plans were approved in late April. Once complete, the park should be open for you to use daily from 7.30am until dusk.
