London Zoo's wildlife hospital invites you to watch animal procedures in real-time.
The London Zoo has always had plenty going on behind the scenes, but its newest attraction is going to pull back the curtain like never before. A new wildlife health centre is on the way, giving you the chance to watch the amazing vets, scientists, and handlers work in real-time – from penguin check-ups to more advanced medical procedures.
The facility is being built at the Zoological Society of London inside London Zoo, effectively offering a working animal hospital where you can actually see vets in action.
What Is The London Zoo’s New Attraction?
The wildlife health centre will act as a fully functioning animal hospital, but with public access.
You’ll be able to watch vets treating zoo animals through a special viewing gallery, which could include everything from routine health checks, to frog x-rays, or gorilla CT scans.
It’s designed to give a closer look at the work that happens every day behind closed doors, as well as a wider initiative to better educate the public.
What Will You Be Able To See?
Depending on the schedule, the centre will allow you to watch a range of procedures, including:
-
Routine health checks and vaccinations
-
Diagnostic imaging like X-rays and CT scans
-
Specialist care for injured or sick animals
-
Occasional post-mortem examinations for research
-
Training-based sessions with animals
What's great is that many animals are trained to participate in their own care, making procedures calmer and less stressful for them.
When Will The London Zoo's Wildlife Hospital Open?
The plans are still in development, with final details yet to be confirmed. But once complete, the facility at London Zoo is expected to become one of the most interesting visitor experiences in the city.
We'll update you here with any new information.
