Your Guide To London Public Transport On New Year's Eve (2026/27)

Let's be honest: getting home on New Year's Eve can sometimes put a damper on the night's otherwise excellent plans. With over 100,000 people descending on the South Bank alone for the fireworks, London on 31st December is - to put it diplomatically - a bit of a logistical challenge.

But don't let the thought of a post-midnight scramble ruin your night. We've pulled together everything you need to know about getting home on New Year's Eve in London, so you can focus on the fun stuff and leave the transport stress to us.

The Golden Rule: Plan Before You Go

This cannot be stressed enough. The single biggest mistake people make on NYE is assuming they'll figure out the journey home once the parties and fireworks are done. By that point, stations are heaving, roads are closed, and Uber surge pricing is doing something truly horrifying to your bank balance.

Spend five minutes before you head out checking your route on the TfL Journey Planner and the National Rail Journey Planner. Know your nearest open station, have a backup option, and - if you're getting a taxi - book it in advance.

The Tube

Good news: the London Underground runs through the night on New Year's Eve, with most lines operating special extended services into the early hours of 1st January. It's one of the best nights of the year to be a Tube passenger - in theory, at least.

What to know:

  • Most lines run overnight, but the Waterloo & City line does not — it finishes earlier in the evening, so don't rely on it
  • Stations near the fireworks — particularly Embankment, Westminster, Waterloo and Charing Cross — will be subject to entry and exit controls, and may be exit-only or temporarily closed at peak times after midnight. Stewards will direct you
  • Expect significant queuing at central stations between midnight and 1:30am. If you can wait it out with a drink somewhere warm, you'll have a much easier time from around 1:30-2am onwards
  • Use your Oyster card or contactless as normal - normal TfL fares apply on NYE (free travel, sadly, is a thing of the past)

Pro tip: If you're near the South Bank after the fireworks, walk east towards Blackfriars or Cannon Street rather than fighting the crowds at Waterloo or Embankment. It adds ten minutes on foot but saves you thirty in queues.

The Elizabeth Line

The Elizabeth line runs a special all-night service on NYE, making it one of the most reliable ways home if it's on your route. Trains run roughly every 15 minutes through the night between Hayes & Harlington and Shenfield, and between Reading and Abbey Wood.

Note: there are no overnight services to or from Heathrow on NYE, so if you're heading to the airport, plan accordingly.

The DLR

The DLR also runs a special all-night service on New Year's Eve, with trains every 15 minutes on all routes. Great news if you're heading east - towards Canary Wharf, Greenwich, Stratford or beyond.

London Overground

The Overground is a bit patchier on NYE, with overnight services running on some lines but not others. The Mildmay, Weaver and Windrush lines typically run all-night services, but coverage varies by route.

Check the TfL website for the specific lines relevant to your journey - and do this before you go out, not at 1am on a platform.

Night Buses

Night buses are your best friend on NYE - they run all night across London and are far less crowded than the Tube in the immediate aftermath of the fireworks. If your nearest Tube station is chaos, walk a few streets away from the main drag and pick up a night bus instead.

The TfL bus map will show you which routes pass near you. Key night bus corridors include Oxford Street, Trafalgar Square, London Bridge and Brixton.

National Rail

If you're heading out of London entirely, some National Rail operators run additional late-night services after midnight on NYE. Historically, extra trains have run from London Charing Cross, Cannon Street and London Bridge in the early hours.

However, London Waterloo East station closes from around 23:45 on NYE, so factor that in if you're a Southwestern Railway or South Eastern passenger.

Always check National Rail's NYE overnight trains page for the latest confirmed services - these are usually published in November/December.

Taxis & Ride-Hailing Apps

If you're planning to get an Uber, Bolt or black cab home, there are two things to know:

  1. Surge pricing will be real. Ride-hailing apps will be charging multiples of the normal fare around midnight. If you're set on this option, either book a licensed minicab in advance through a local firm, or be prepared to walk away from the fireworks zone before requesting a pickup
  2. You can't be picked up in the core zone. Road closures around the South Bank, Westminster and Victoria Embankment mean ride-hailing apps won't be able to reach you near the fireworks. You'll need to walk to a designated pickup point outside the closure area - typically 15-20 minutes on foot from the main viewing areas

Black cabs can be hailed on the street and are a solid option if you're willing to walk a bit further out first.

Road Closures: What to Expect

From the afternoon of 31st December, roads around central London begin closing progressively. The main affected areas are:

  • Victoria Embankment
  • South Bank and Waterloo
  • Westminster Bridge and surrounding streets
  • Trafalgar Square

Some bridges will be closed to vehicles entirely, and pedestrian flow on others will be managed by stewards. If you're driving into London for NYE - don't. Seriously. Public transport is your only realistic option.

The Congestion Charge is suspended from 25th December through to 1st January, but the ULEZ remains in operation throughout (except on Christmas Day itself).

Our Top Tips for Getting Home Stress-Free

  • Travel in early, not late. Get to your venue in the afternoon to avoid the evening rush into the fireworks zone
  • Screenshot your route. Mobile signal in central London on NYE is notoriously patchy - have your journey saved offline before you go
  • Agree a meeting point. If you're in a group, pick a specific landmark to regroup at if you get separated — not just "outside the station"
  • Walk further, queue less. The further you walk from the fireworks before getting on the Tube, the shorter the queue
  • Wait it out. If you're not in a rush, the best thing you can do is find a late bar and wait until 1:30–2am. The difference in queues is remarkable
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking more than you think
