We couldn’t be more excited to announce that Juju’s is renewing its Art collection! Join us on Thursday 6th of October from 7:00pm for the launch of the exhibition ‘En Son Sein’ brought to you by the talented Emma Boittiaux. SLEEC founder will join us for a talk about art and activism from 7:30 pm: “The intimate is political; taking back ownership of our narratives through art”. After the talk, Vanes music will accompany the beautiful art all evening!
En son sein, Emma Boittiaux’s ongoing photography series, focuses on the connection between women and their breasts, creating a space for them to open a dialogue with a part of our body that has always been over-sexualised. A sexualisation that the artist has been aware of from young age from the outside world, clashing with the discourse that was going on at home.
Her mother, a retired nurse with a lactation degree, held a support group at home to help women through their breastfeeding journey, where discussions were centred around women’s breasts without shame or judgement. With En son sein, the artist likes to think that she is continuing her mother’s work, she does not have any medical knowledge so she keeps her mother’s memento going through her own language; sculpture. Each piece is thought through the testimony of the women it was made for. The result; a jewellery-like object that the artist had spent up to 40 hours making all by hand, like the hours her mother dedicated to the women she was helping.

On the occasion of the launch, SLEEC founder Meggan will join Emma on stage for a talk about art and activism: “The intimate is political; taking back ownership of our narratives through art”. SLEEC is a survivor-run organisation that changes systems, supports survivors and dismantles the roots of male violence. The organisation is run by The Disobedient Survivors (AKA Meggan and Bryony). They fight for collective care and more radical approaches to recovery and survivor identity. They work towards reimagining and rebuilding the systems that cause harm and oppression through compassion-based education, creative media and platforming survivor voices.

Following the talk, London-based Spanish DJ Vanes will be taking over the decks for dark beats and high-energy melodic percussions set. Using music to melt through others art forms, Vanes’s strength is found in her transcendent dancefloor moments. Echoed in a flawless aesthetic, her performances feel both safe and unpredictable. Her exploration of genres include Melodic Techno, Indie dance, Afro House, Progressive House, Organic House. Her style has been commended by some of the scene’s most respected artists including: Dixon, DJ Tennis Damian Lazarus, Bedouin, keinemusic, Adriatique, – to name a few.
This event is in partnership with Radical Art Review, a free magazine where art meets activism. Now in its ninth issue, UNRAVEL, Radical Art Review tackles political issues through the lens of culture while taking the fight to the gatekeepers of the art world. Their team will be there on the night to present their work and distribute magazines. They also published an article about Emma’s work, you can have a read-through here: https://bit.ly/3faT5nW
