Brick Lane Jazz Festival makes its debut at the Truman Brewery in April 2022: Three days of jazz music set across five stages, with twenty-four performing artists, the festival will showcase the best of London’s vibrant jazz scene. On Friday 22nd April, Tru Thoughts Recordings will be taking over Cafe 1001.

✦ ABOUT TRU THOUGHTS ✦
Tru Thoughts is a British independent record label founded in Brighton in 1999. Since the acclaimed first album release of Bonobo's debut Animal Magic, the label has put out over 200 LPs, across genres from electronic, funk, soul and hip hop to jazz, tropical, grime and more. On Friday 22nd April, we're proud to welcome DJ Duo Anushka & Ebi Soda band for a takeover at Cafe 1001!

✦ ABOUT EBI SODA ✦
Staunch anti-traditionalists, Ebi Soda are a group of musicians who thrive on the idea of contradiction, creating an idiosyncratic blend of jazz, hip-hop and no-wave post-punk.
Seemingly more inspired by the atmosphere inside a rave – from UK-based underground genres like broken beat to drill – than the sounds heard inside a jazz club. Their only debt to typical jazz being to attempt to innovate and experiment at every opportunity. Characterised by searing trombones, erratic drum-breaks and heavy electronic multi-effect soundscapes that aid on a foundation of breakbeats and sensual basslines.
Formed in the seaside town of Brighton, Ebi Soda keep a post-punk DIY ethic close to their hearts, with songs often birthed from sweaty smokey university bedrooms rather than that of the big band hall.
Ebi Soda are: VVilhelm (Trombone), Conor Knight (Guitar), Hari-Lee Evans (Bass), Louis Jenkins (Keys), Sam Schlich Davies (Drums)

✦ ABOUT ANUSHKA ✦
Brighton-based duo Max Wheeler (producer) and Victoria Port (singer/songwriter) AKA Anushka transcend the UK jazz-electronic scene, melding dancefloor beats with sweet melodies, carried by mystifying female vocals.
Having originally met whilst exploring Brighton’s legendary club culture, the pair bonded over a passion for making and recording music and a mutual love of Victoria sponge cake, gaining support from Gilles Peterson for their first single “Yes Guess” a few weeks after settling down to work on the track.
Anushka signed to Brownswood Recordings in 2014 and released their “Distorted Air” EP which brought to life their love and understanding of jazz, musicality, connection with the living dance floor and the pull and push of love. Their debut album ‘Broken Circuit’ followed shortly after and gained support from the likes of Annie Mac, Phil Taggart, Jamz Supernova, B.Traits and Mary Anne Hobbs alongside features in The Guardian, The Arts Desk and Dazed. The success of the release saw the duo take to the stage at SXSW and alongside KAYTRANADA at Annie Mac Presents: Lost & Found Festival.
Victoria and Max have spent the past few years building their own homes and families, letting go of expectations and settling into a sound they feel truly represents them. After working together for nearly 10 years, their journey has led to a musical exploration reflecting what inspires and moves them.
Their first release with Brighton-based label Tru Thoughts, ‘Yemaya’ signifies this point in their growth as individuals and a band. The album takes its name from the Orisha Yemaya; the Goddess of the Sea, protector of women and the Eternal Mother in the Santeria/Yoruba religion. It is believed in Santeria that Yemaya guides and supports her children, helping them to grow. Celebrating their progression and those who have helped them on the way, the title expresses the oneness that the duo felt making the record.
With this LP, Anushka’s sound is as driven by their respect for the UK’s rich heritage of breakbeat culture as it ever has been, with an honesty and understanding that comes with time. Tracks taken from the EP have been remixed by Gilles Peterson and Bluey AKA STR4TA, Japanese duo Slowly and labelmate WheelUP.
