Introducing Penfolds
Penfolds is one of the world’s most celebrated wine houses, defined by a spirit of curiosity, craftsmanship, and continual reinvention. Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, the estate began as a pioneering producer of fortified wines before boldly turning its focus to Claret-style red wines as early as the 1870s- a decision that would shape the future of Australian winemaking.
A defining moment came in 1951 with the creation of Grange, followed by the introduction of the iconic Penfolds Bin wines in the 1960s. These releases redefined expectations for Australian reds, demonstrating not only remarkable depth and precision but also an unprecedented capacity for long-term ageing. Together, they marked the ascent of Penfolds as a modern fine-wine house.
From Koonunga Hill through to Bin 23 Pinot Noir and the legendary Grange, Penfolds wines share a recognisable House Style- an interconnected DNA that speaks to balance, structure, and consistency across regions and varieties. This philosophy has evolved into a global portfolio, where fruit is sourced from diverse vineyards yet unified by a singular vision.
While early Penfolds wines were celebrated for their bold, New World exuberance, today’s style favours clarity, finesse, and typicity. Contemporary winemaking emphasises restraint- allowing fruit purity, site expression, and vintage character to shine, without excessive oak or alcohol. The result is a collection of wines with refined structure, vibrant energy, and a strong sense of place.
At the heart of Penfolds’ enduring success is Chief Winemaker Peter Gago, whose tenure has been defined by a deep respect for tradition paired with thoughtful innovation. Blending remains a cornerstone of the Penfolds philosophy, with parcels meticulously assessed for balance, expression, and ageing potential. Gago’s mastery lies in harmonising these elements into wines that are unmistakably Penfolds, yet expressive of their regional origins.
Together, Grange and the broader Penfolds portfolio form an evolving ecosystem: a legacy of imagination, precision, and excellence that continues to shape the future of fine wine.
