Some people sing through life … others only mime.

Melody Smart is the friendly face of the Ocean View Hotel, always there at Reception with a breezy smile and a solution to every problem. She finds joy in the little things—a buttered digestive, an interesting article in the Radio Times. When she wins a free singing lesson in the hotel raffle, Melody looks forward to learning how to sing. But during the course of her free hour with Evangeline Gibson, Melody’s carefully constructed personality begins to unravel, and we discover the secrets and lies behind the ‘Have a Nice Day!’.

Two performers, with the help of a keyboard and a couple of chairs, create a world of characters in Melody’s past and present in this 75-minute musical by Nia Williams. Staged by Three Chairs and a Hat, who nabbed 4-star reviews at Edinburgh in 2019, ‘Melody’ has played at the company’s Oxford base to wonderful reviews, and comes to the Phoenix for a London debut before heading to the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

Some of the feedback for Melody from reviewers and audiences:
‘A really compelling piece of theatre’ … ‘Poignant, funny, painful, uplifting and deeply human’ … ‘Had you turning on an emotional sixpence’ … ‘Flawlessly performed’ …  ‘Who butters digestives??’

I bought tickets for a drink and a table. We got there (early) and were told we could only sit at tables without cutlery. ALL the tables had cutlery, though few were occupied. We were not offered the free drink. We left and we won't be coming back
