Phelps has been producing and influencing ground-breaking jazz since his time at university, when he founded and co-led the extraordinary Jazz sensation Empirical, widely understood to have been a major force in the rebirth of the young British jazz scene. Since then, he has played with some of the greatest names in music, from Wynton Marsalis to Amy Winehouse.
