About Jazz Re:freshed Weekly

Thursdays at Ninety One Living Room are presented by Jazz Re:freshed. This Thursday, we are delighted to welcome artist, producer and musician COLLECTIVA to the Living Room stage.

About the artist

COLECTIVA explore the spaces between Afro-Latin music and Jazz while reflecting on themes of sisterhood and female empowerment. Crafting thoughtful arrangements rooted in the sonorities of Africa, Latin America and the diaspora, they have birthed a sound affectionately dubbed jazz tropicaliente (hot-tropical jazz), rich in bold horn lines, jazz harmony and Afro-Latin groove.
Anti-hierarchical in arrangement and structure, COLECTIVA exist as a vessel and a platform in which women instrumentalists come together through their love of and appreciation for Afro Latin and Jazz genres, composing collaboratively, in the spirit of sisterhood.
Initiated in 2019, COLECTIVA have performed at iconic UK venues including Union Chapel, Roundhouse, Barbican Centre and Southbank Centre, joining lineups curated by Nubya Garcia, Jazz Re:Freshed, Soho Radio, Glastonbury Festival and Worldwide FM amongst other notable figures on the UK Jazz and Latin scenes.
Their debut single, ‘Under The’, released in 2021 on Movimientos, was written in collaboration with jazz pianist Maria Grapsa. ‘Under The’ received huge global radio plays and DJ support from the likes of Huey Morgan and Jamz Supernova on 6 Music, Jazz FM’s Chris Philips and Tim Garcia, and Toshiro Matsuura and Papaoul on Worldwide FM, amongst many others. Premiering on Sounds and Colours magazine, the track was supported by Women in Jazz, and was playlisted on Spotify playlists including Music is My Sanctuary’s Jazz – Future Classics, and Colectivo Futuro’s Music Worth Sharing.
2022 is set to be a pivotal year for the project as they prepare for their debut album release, infusing feminist activism in a string of single campaigns. Their first album single, HDYLYL [How Do You Like Your Ladies] is set for release in 2022, alongside a headline show at London’s Jazz Cafe. COLECTIVA will continue their UK and European tour until June 2022, before launching into festival season.
