Hover Fly is a highly talented composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Her captivating presence, intricately woven jazz-folk neo-soul compositions and fluency on the bass, cello, ukulele and vocals leaves audiences hungry for more. She is stirring up a buzz of excitement behind the scenes of the UK Jazz World ahead of her debut single, coming May 2020.
Writing music from the age of 5, Hover Fly was able to nurture her musicality and expressionism as a member of the richly creative Acorn Music Theatre Company. Alongside learning cello and piano, she formed a popular band in school and recorded her first EP at Henwood Studios, where she would later return, produced by Tom Excell, MD of Nubiyan Twist.
During her music and history of art degree at Durham University she discovered jazz whilst maintaining an integrity for experimentation with a strong flavour of folk. Her yearning for adventure led her to spend an academic year exploring the underground music scene in Prague, Czech Republic, where she also began a solid working relationship with Joe Henwood (Nubiyan Twist). She then toured the UK as singer for the Durham University Big Band including various notable venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club in London.
After University she began recording new material with keys player Oli Cadman and drummer Finn Booth from Nubiyan Twist and became a core member of the Pink Flamingo Jazz Club, a secret pop-up late night venue at Shambala Festival, along with some of the UK’s most exciting jazz musicians on the scene.
She moved to London in 2018 and picked up the bass guitar, which inspired her collaboration with emerging artist and activist Jelly Cleaver as her touring bassist. Playing with many different musicians in the scene, this past year has seen Hover Fly develop into a strong six-piece band. It is made up of saxophonist Joe Henwood (Nubiyan Twist), saxophonist and rising artist Beth Hopkins (Queen Colobus, Jelly Cleaver), trumpet virtuoso and emerging composer Mike Soper (Kongo Dia Ntoteli, Mike Soper Quartet), keys player Hal Sutherland from Bristol-based cinematic free-jazz collective Snazzback, and one of London’s most sought-after female jazz drummers, Tash Keary (Shunaji, Jelly Cleaver, Loucin).
With her debut single coming out in May already aired on BBC 6 Music, Hover Fly is definitely one to watch.
