We're proud to welcome Berlin-based vocalist and writer douniah to our living room stage on Saturday, 17th February for her first ever UK show. Expect lyrics that read like poetry, and neo-experimental jazz with emotion and groove in equal parts.
ABOUT DOUNIAH
douniah’s audience knows her well. The Berlin-based vocalist and writer has developed a reputation in the scene for sublime live performances, since releasing the collaborative ‘Dream Baby - Album’ with Highjohn in 2019. ‘I think that my audience knows me through my performances and continued to grow from there.’ douniah has notably supported Children of Zeus and Sudan Archives across the German leg of their European and world tours respectively, and most recently enchantingly set the stage for Rochelle Jordan’s show at Kantine am Berghain.
Her distinct yet genre-fluid expression is well-honed, with the ability to execute various roles in the creative process with a number of collaborators - notably her omnipresence on the electronic Lost Papers EP with Yoofee, and single "Space for the kidd" from Move78’s forthcoming album ‘Grains’. The interdisciplinary songstress warmly credits her sonic inspirations from hubs such as the pioneering Black communities across America, all the way to North Africa - where Gnaoua and Raï music gave something tangible to a young douniah listening to her mother's collection.
Confidence exudes from her presence and assertion. In 2021, douniah was invited to take centre stage at the intimate Salon Tülüfülükülümülü livestream from Thalia Theatre, there she performed semi-improvised poetry, music, and choreographed dance. An esteemed member of the ALVOZAY collective, she was one of the very few musicians on the bill at Documenta fifteen, and played Kampnagel Internationales’ 2021 Sommerfestival. Through her various avenues, douniah illuminates herself and her surroundings with a critical and strong voice, hoping to create an Echo for you to sit with.
