Cubatas is a well-established tapas restaurant in Charing Cross, just a stone’s throw from the lively Sauchiehall stretch. It serves up a variety of authentic Spanish tapas in an intimate setting and we couldn’t wait to spend an evening trying out the many dishes on offer.
This is a stylish, dimly lit venue with bare stone walls, stone tiled floors, and warm broody colours, giving it a cosy cave-like feel that really added to the ambiance of our night. The candlelit dark wooden tables and leather benches provide snug nooks for diners and in these surroundings you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to an Iberian wine bar.
The Food and Drink
Served up on slate tiles and wooden dishes, each item was a delectable treat leaving us (politely!) fighting over the last morsel. The combination of flavours in the courgette stuffed with cheese, sundried tomatoes, black olives and orange at £5.25 was our firm favourite with the zesty orange perfectly setting off the salty olives and tomatoes. The aubergine layers with tomato, cheese, béchamel, and basil oil at £5.75 was a moreish cheesy delight and we seriously considered ordering another one. But luckily we had the fried cheese with blueberry jam for £5 to look forward to, with the simple textured cheese brought to life by the sweet condiment. At £5.25 the mushrooms stuffed with spinach and goat’s cheese was a delicious mix of earthy tastes and the green vegetables with tomato, onion, walnuts, and goat’s cheese (£4.75) were a refreshing accompaniment to the heartiness of the other dishes. And just in case all of this wasn’t enough we ordered the colourful vegetable paella for £4.75 which had a beautifully smoky taste and arrived piping hot in its original dish.
Six tapas between two was more than enough - we were just disappointed we didn’t have room for more. There is a large selection for vegetarians and the majority of the dishes are suitable for coeliacs too. We ordered only vegetarian dishes however the diners around us seemed delighted with the selection of meat and fish dishes on the menu including speciality options such as pork cheek, seabass, and scallops, all ranging between £4.75 and £6.75. As for drinks, wine is Cubatas’ forte and there is a huge selection of whites, reds, and rosés from all over the world served by the glass, carafe, or bottle.
For the earlier part of the evening the diners were mostly couples and smaller groups from the surrounding offices grabbing a post-work Friday meal. As the evening wore on however, bigger parties arrived, the chatter and fun turned up a notch, and the restaurant was transformed into a bustling venue keeping the friendly staff on their toes. This is the perfect place for a romantic date or a cosy catch-up with a friend or two; however the tapas style lends itself to group dining as well.
Tapas dining is becoming more and more popular in eateries around Glasgow, but if it’s authentic Spanish cuisine you are looking for, Cubatas is a great place to try. Stylishly served dishes packed full of flavour served in an intimate venue make for a wonderful dining experience.
